Technical Artist

Obsidian Entertainment is looking for a skilled, knowledgeable, self-motivated technical artist to join our growing team of RPG developers.
The Technical Artist’s primary focus is to support our environment art team. It requires a solid understanding of Maya and Unity, with the core purpose of developing cutting-edge tools for effective asset import and export, shader development and material effects implementation, efficient rendering pipelines and post rendering image manipulation and export.

Responsibilities:

Design and assist in developing tools and pipelines for Artists, Animators and Designers
Work directly with the Art Director, team leads and production artists
Proactively seek out inefficiencies and problems in existing pipelines and identify potential solutions
Improve and enhance tools/processes throughout the project cycle
Assist programmers and designers in researching and developing new game features
Assist in checking art content against technical guidelines prior to integration in the game

Requirements:

High proficiency and understanding of Maya, it’s materials, and network rendering system, Unity development environment, and Photoshop
Functional proficiency with Maya modeling and animation
Must be able to work comfortably with MEL script
4-year degree form an accredited college or university or equivalent industry experience preferred
Excellent High and Low poly modeling skills
Knowledge of architecture, materials and lighting
Solid grasp of color theory
4+ years in the game industry with 2 shipped titles
Ability to rapidly master proprietary tools and development pipelines
Ability to be resourceful and come up with creative solutions
Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate between design, art and programming
Strong organizational and mentoring skills
Passion for gaming

Pluses:

Strong foundation in traditional art
A complete understanding of Maya’s Scene Assembly Tools
Experience with an off the shelf game engine, i.e. Cryengine, Unreal, etc.
Must be able to work comfortably with common scripting languages (MAX script, Python, etc.)
Demonstrated initiative and strong problem-solving skills
Functional experience with 3DSMax

Portfolio Requirements:

A web portfolio that demonstrates a range of high quality 3D and 2D art
Samples, demonstrations or documentation of tools pipelines developed to overcome past challenges
Samples from previous industry work
