FX Supervisor

Description

The FX Supervisor is responsible to identify all effects in a sequence and clarify with Directors, VFX Supervisor, and Production Designer when necessary. The FX Supervisor should demonstrate a mastery of the toolset, techniques, and workflow for FX development to be able to effectively supervise the FX development team technically and artistically.

Duties and Responsibilities

• May be required to do hands on development and/or shot work.
• Actively seek out and understand the Directors’ vision for a film.
• In collaboration with the Production Supervisor, ensure on time delivery of effects elements within established production schedule. If creative appetite is too large, then need to present ideas and suggest creative alternatives. Consistently look for a more efficient way of doing an effect (i.e. reuse of an effect).
• Responsible for creating the necessary look as designed by the Director(s), VFX Supervisor, and Production Designer(s) within budget parameters for a particular sequence.
• Work with Production Supervisor in designing production schedule; manage progress and delivery of effects elements based on production schedule milestones (i.e. start of motion, start & end of key shot lighting, start of production lighting, and final lighting delivery). Offer suggestions on how to achieve FX in the movie within the man weeks allotted in the budget.
• Bid effects in each sequence. Collaborate with Production Supervisor regarding progress and setbacks of FX Animators as it relates to the original effects bid. Appropriately elevate concerns to VFX Supervisor and Prod Mgr.
• State potential costs or schedule implications when receiving comments on effect elements relative to delivery dates.
• Present effects in daily walkthroughs to VFX Supervisor or to Directors in FX Dailies. Ensure creative direction from VFX Supervisor and Directors to the crew are heard and clarified.
• Assess and determine the need for developing a new system or use existing system. Supervise development to ensure delivery of FX element.
• Manage process of integrating effects elements into shots and sequences: evaluate technical process for each element/system and communicate steps for shot integration to production management; coordinate technical aspects of integration with Lighting Sequence Supervisors and/or other department leads; and oversee FX Animators’ interdepartmental communication related to effects integration.
• Facilitate interdepartmental communication, dependencies, and technical problem solving related to FX production. Anticipate production problems. Collaborate with other department peers to identify solutions to production issues.
• Perform daily one-on-one rounds with FX Animators: critique work and assist with technical problem solving, and determine when effects are ready for review with VFX Supervisor.
• Develop/oversee any new technology required to meet the specific creative and technical needs of the show.

Managerial:

• Appropriately elevate issues and solutions to Production Management effectively.
• Is able to meet or exceed the creative goals of the department.
• Work closely with the Production Supervisors in the management of the department and to create the schedule and ensure schedules and deliverables are met for both shots and sequences. Supervises FX Leads and FX Animators.
• Work with the Production Supervisor on casting shots to FX Animators.
• Responsible for improving the performance of artists on the team. Mentor artists to provide guidance, experience and insight. Involved in trying to resolve performance related issues.
• Responsible with Production Supervisor for maintaining crew morale. Foster good working atmosphere and ethics.
• Deliver reviews with Production Supervisor to crew members; help manage career growth of staff; provide recommendations for promotions.
• Work with management in the casting and staffing of talent on the show.
• Help with recruiting and perform interviews. Ensure that FX new hires are provided the necessary training.
• Responsible for participation in the unification and initiatives for the studio.
• Facilitate meetings with artists to keep the crew informed on show changes and requirements.
• Ensure open lines of communication with other departments and department heads.

Qualifications

? 8+ years of experience including production experience in feature film animation
? Strong working knowledge of Maya, Houdini, C++ and Python
? Proven Leadership experience
? Experience building new pipelines.
? Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Modeling Supervisor

Description

The Modeling Supervisor is responsible for building and executing complex CG models and supervise the work of the modelers. Modeling Supervisor is also responsible for translating the creative vision of the VFX Supervisor and to ensure the direction is carried out on schedule and within budget.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Along with the DFX Supervisor interprets and translates creative direction given by the Production Designer, Art Director, and VFX Supervisor
•Manage complexity of the models. Establish and enforce standards for the department so that the models work well for the rest of the pipeline.
•Perform daily one-on-one rounds with Modelers. Troubleshoot creative and technical issues as they arise and determine when models are ready for review.
•Attend other departments’ reviews as needed to address modeling questions or comments.
•Work with the Digital FX Supervisor and other departments to communicate Modeling needs and provide for other departments’ needs.
•Bid the schedule along with the Digital FX Supervisor and Production Supervisor.
•Ensure the presentation of models.
•Enforce directory structure, naming conventions and versioning for all models.
•Responsible for multi-picture overview with regard to how 3D Models will be used in the evolving pipeline.
•Proactively maintain a consistent working methodology by actively sharing tips and tricks between shows, partnering with other Supervisors and staying current on other shows’ development and initiative while staying abreast of the various tools.
•Highlight cost implications of requests or changes.
•Supervise work on multiple projects

Global:

•Work with TDs, R&D, Production Engineering and Production Management to improve and evolve the production pipeline and methodologies.
•Communicate to R&D, Production Engineering or Digital FX Supervisor requests for new tools and improvements to existing tools.
•Participate in technology meetings and other meeting as required to help evolve the toolset towards studio objectives.

Managerial:

•Work closely with the Production Supervisors in the management of the department and to create the schedule and ensure quotas/deadlines are met.
•Work with the Production Supervisor on casting shots/assignments to Modelers.

•Responsible with Production Supervisor for maintaining crew morale.
•Work with management in the casting and staffing of talent on the show.

•Facilitate meetings with artists to keep the crew informed on show changes and requirements.

Qualifications

•8+ years of experience including production experience in feature film animation
•Strong working knowledge of Maya, Mudbox and Zbrush
•Experience building new pipelines.

Character FX Supervisor

Description

The Character FX Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the pipeline and shot production for feathers, fur, hair, finaling and clothing simulation. In addition, will develop/oversee any new technology required to meet the specific creative and technical needs of a show as assigned by the Digital FX Supervisor and Production Management.

Responsibilities

Work closely with the Head of Character Animation, Production Designer, Digital FX Supervisor and other department heads to maintain the integrity of the Character Design, Animation and Look of Film, as related to Character FX.
Provide input towards the vision of the future direction of technology in maintaining a world-class pipeline.
Approve department deliverables.
Develop and manage workflow processes and staff.
Identify potential exposures to plan. Follow through on and reevaluate plan accordingly.
Lead department meetings, manages expectations and provides communications during meetings.
Troubleshoot creative/technical issues as they arise. Provide hands-on assistance to the Character FX Animators.
Present Character FX elements in daily walkthroughs to Digital FX Supervisor in dailies. Ensure creative direction from VFX Supervisor and Directors to the crew are heard and clarified.

Department TD

Description

A Technical Director (TD) provides critical support to a show’s artists and department heads. A Technical Director will design, develop, and implement new tools and processes for a particular show or department. As needed, a Technical Director may be asked to do shot work.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide support and development of tools and procedures to extend and enhance the pipeline.
• Assist animators and artists with troubleshooting of shots. Issues may include problems with fur, clothing, particle effects, animation, and rendering.
• Support and work with multiple departments, including Modeling, Animation, Lighting, FX, and Research and Development.
• Ensure software development follows studio policies and guidelines.
• Work closely with other Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.
• Assist in training and mentoring of other Entry Level Technical Directors.
• Reports to the show’s Supervising Technical Director.

Required Skills

Qualifications

• Production experience in computer animation, visual effects, or game industry.
• Experience with tool integration into existing or new pipelines.
• Experience with two or more of the following software packages required; Maya, Nuke, Houdini, Arnold, Katana, RV.
• Some knowledge of Linux required.
• Strong programming skills. Proficiency in C++, Object Oriented Programming, Python desired.
• Ability to establish priorities, work independently or within a group, and work with minimal supervision.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in dealing with both technical and artistic groups. Ability to communicate in English and Mandarin preferred.

Education

B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.
