Production Software Developer Simulation

SUMMARY:

This position is targeted for supporting simulation artists through feature development of proprietary simulation software. Troubleshoots technical problems that arise in the production process and develops solutions in a high paced production environment. Uses and assists in the creation of simulation assets. Uses and improves the software developed to assist in the production of feature films.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with creative and technical leads to develop simulation software and pipelines, as needed for the production of feature animation.
Ensure that the result functions in accordance with specifications, including, where applicable, performance, user interface, aesthetics, and robustness.
Review and revise the result with the supervisors, and creative or technical lead.
Maintain and enhance completed results. Provide technical support to users. Produce author related documentation.
Detailed problem analysis and resolution of issues.
Ability to triage incoming issues and provide rapid response/resolution.
Develop techniques to achieve a directed look hitting specific artistic notes

QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong 3D math and computer graphics experience required, experience with numerical techniques for simulation (i.e., cloth, hair, rigid bodies, finite elements) preferred
An excellent understanding of 3D computer graphics theory and practice is required
Strong programming skills in the UNIX / Linux environment are required
Strong problem solving skills with high attention to detail, balancing quick turnaround with long-term quality
Knowledge of 3D graphic applications is a plus (i.e. Maya, Houdini)
Education in computer science, mathematics, physics, architecture, or engineering is preferred
Experience with film, games, or other graphics production experience is preferred.
Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
Must be able to work alone and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure, and with people from different artistic and technical disciplines
Must be open to direction and able to embrace change.
Willingness to work on shots and learn the production process
A good eye for physical motion and understanding of animation concepts and terms

Unix/Network Administrator

SUMMARY:

Pixar’s Network & Server Admin group is a small team of Systems Administrators who are responsible for all aspects of the studio’s network, server and core infrastructure. We work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that all systems and services the Studio relies on to create our movies are fully operational with ample room to grow. From DNS to NTP to BGP (we really know our TLAs!), we are constantly looking for new ways to stay ahead of the curve. We are looking for someone to join our team as a network-centric Unix/Network Admin who is nimble, has a positive attitude, and works well as part of a small team.
Pixar is a dynamic, fast-paced environment and our group thrives on creative thinking, independent initiative, and close collaboration. We interface primarily with other groups within the Systems Department, and the Studio Tools Department, building everything from physical servers to virtual machines to racks to cloud services. We are always looking for new ways to automate processes and make optimal use of the myriad of data sources flowing from our systems and networks. A given problem might entail writing Python or shell scripts, digging into a vendor’s API documentation, or trawling through an SNMP MIB.
Some of the stuff we work with every day, in no particular order: Linux/UNIX, DNS, DHCP, Firewalls, AAA servers, Mail servers/appliances, load balancers, routers, switches, wireless LANs, WAN connectivity, and fiber optic networking.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Deep understanding of IP routing protocols (e.g. OSPF/OSPFv3/BGP/BGP4)
Full understanding of the IP network stack/OSI model
Familiarity with IPv6 and dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 deployments
Solid understanding of DNS, DHCP, NTP, RADIUS protocols
Solid understanding of multiple OS network stacks (UNIX/Linux, Mac OS, Windows)
Ability to dig into tcpdump/wireshark captures to analyze network traffic
Understanding of Certificate-based authentication, PKI
Familiarity with MDM solutions (e.g. ClearPass)
Familiarity with monitoring systems (Zabbix, etc.)
Comfortable working with firewalls, load balancers, WiFi networks, routers, VPN appliances, etc.
Experience working closely with network/security vendors to troubleshoot/debug issues
Strong security background preferred (intrusion prevention/detection, etc.)
Expertise in programming or scripting
Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to effectively communicate highly technical concepts
Ability to work well under pressure
Meticulous attention to detail
Ability to work in a datacenter to manage/install hardware; some heavy lifting (30lbs or less) or use of a “server lift” may be required
Self-starter; motivated; comfortable/willing to ask others for assistance
Ability to prioritize, respond, and follow through on multiple simultaneous requests
Minimum of 5 years in an IS/IT support position

Story Artist

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receive written and verbal descriptions of a sequence from the director or head of story
Create quick thumbnail sketches through to finished detailed storyboard panels
Perform background research to inform the story process
Illustrate script pages and come up with story ideas
Pitch storyboards to the director and other members of the team
Work with director and head of story to define staging, pacing and camera action
Come up with inventive ideas with a sense of entertainment and humor
Develop character personality and dramatic/comedic action
Draw storyboards for scenes assigned
Refine dialogue where needed
Revise, edit and modify sketches as needed, per director’s notes

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS:

Portfolio should include a combination of storyboards, beat boards, and personal work (sketches, drawings, etc), including 3-5 samples that demonstrate:

Practical knowledge of principles of filmmaking and animation, cinematic/camera language, acting and staging
Strong storytelling abilities that feature character, emotion and movement
Strong draftsmanship and ability to create appealing characters and practical environments to meet story needs
A range of action, comedy, and drama scenes are encouraged.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree or certificate in art, graphic design or related field or equivalent graphic design experience
Practical knowledge of cinematic language, acting and staging
Strong storytelling abilities that feature character, emotion and movement
Strong understanding of the principles of animation; emotion, acting, movement is required

SKILLS:

Ability to analyze scenes in written form and translate into visual product
Ability to express story and character through drawings
Ability to invent action and express it through drawing
Ability to present work in a clear and entertaining way
Ability to work collaboratively
Ability to work under pressure, in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
Must be open to direction and able to embrace change
Experience with Photoshop and Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet helpful

Layout Artist

SUMMARY:

We are looking for an innovative Layout Artist who can create sequences of shots that tell the story visually through the application of traditional filmmaking principles using Pixar’s proprietary animation software.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establish composition, character staging, camera positioning and animate camera movement.
Able to simply animate character poses to help convey the intent of a shot (blocking).
Provide technical set-up of shots for downstream production departments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

3-5 years of experience as a layout artist on animated feature, or cinematographer on live action feature
Proven artistic skills in cinematography, including a strong sense of composition, staging, and camera language
Understand basic concepts of character animation and character posing
Be organized and technically proficient
Be able to take direction and willing to address constructive feedback
Have good communication and problem-solving skills
Camera polish experience a plus
Be able to deliver on schedule, working efficiently under pressure
Willing to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends) and/or overtime on short notice
