Job Description

A Rigging Technical Director is responsible for working with Art Designers and Animators to realize a character in digital form. This includes both shaping the character’s 3D geometry and the delivery of a well-designed set of animation controls for manipulating that geometry. The three main disciplines are modeling, rigging and rig building.

An applicant for a rig position is expected to be very strong in at least 2 of these areas. If you have strong artistic skills your two areas of focus might be modeling and rigging. If you are a CG grad you might be strong in rig construction as you can program and have math skills and you might have a good eye for modeling and motion.

Modeling covers the spectrum of being able to build humans, robots, cars or toys.

Task Description:

Using modeling software to sculpt and refine a neutral 3D model to fit the aesthetic needs of Character Designers.
Designing and maintaining a modeling topology conducive to the storyboarded range of deformations.

Reel guidelines

On a reel we look for examples of digital sculpting of organic forms such as faces or bodies as well as a variety of works and styles. The best presentations include a turntable showing the final result and a turntable with the mesh so we can evaluate topology. Modeling is an artistic endeavor so showing examples of drawings or clay sculpts will help. Showing cloth modeling and/or hair modeling will also strengthen a reel.

Rigging is the process of giving a character controls for movement, therein “articulating” its ranges of motion. We like to think of it as bringing the character to life.

Task Description:

Working closely with Animators to provide and refine an articulation of the full range of expressions and body movement needed to support a character’s acting range in the film. A truth to materials/anatomy and animation principles is emphasized, as is patience and a willingness to experiment!
Creative use of deformers to achieve a specific deformation called for by Animation with a concise set of animation controls.

Reel Guidelines

What we look for in a reel is examples of rigging that support the type of character that is being attempted. A realistic character will have be true to the materials it is made out of. A cartoony character might have Tex Avery touches. Since rigging serves animation showing examples of animation will strengthen the reel.

Rig building is the process of building and supporting rigs that a group of riggers can apply to a set of characters.

Task Description:

Designing and maintaining Master Rigs that can be re-used as a basis for articulating similar characters, or applying existing Rigs to newly created character sculpts.
Writing scripts to facilitate workflow improvements in Python or MEL, or working with a programmer to enable them to make such improvements effectively.
Brainstorming new techniques and ideas for user interfaces, deformation tools, and character specific rigging solutions.
Troubleshooting technical issues inherent in maintaining a clean file structure and pipelines for both in-house and 3rd party software.
Having proficiency in a programming language and math is important.
Reel Guidelines
What we look for in reels are systems that can be used to make faces or bodies. Showing how the controls work and the interface for the
animators is important. Descriptive text for the technical designs/tools shown on the reel should be provided on a separate breakdown sheet included with your reel/resume.

Summary of Position

Reviews concept art, storyboards, and rough animation to plan and execute the simulations and special effects needed for a shot.

Responsibilities

Simulates natural phenomena by applying direct and procedural animation techniques to create a variety of effects.
Shades, renders, and composites effects elements.
Uses proprietary tools to implement solutions.
Creates and communicates animation timing for effects.
Works with production team to create the desired look for the effect.
Works in a team environment to determine various design and technical solutions.
Coordinates with other team members on integrating and optimizing the effects process with the balance of the production pipeline.

Qualifications

Experience in film or television effects production.
Degree in Computer Science, Visual Effects or a related area.
Thorough knowledge of both 2D and 3D computer graphics techniques.
Working knowledge of Houdini required.
Shading and scripting experience required.
Compositing experience a plus.
UNIX/LINUX operating system experience a plus.
C/C++ programming experience a plus.

Reel Submission Guidelines

On an Effects reel we look for a good understanding of timing, scale, weight, acceleration, and detail in the effects. Only show the work that you feel best represents your skills and highlights your strengths. Short, high quality reels are preferred over long reels with work that might not best represent your skills or aesthetic.

The most important thing for us to know when watching your reel is exactly what you did in each shot. Ideally, we would like for you to show us the elements you used to create the shot effects along with the final shot. This is especially important when showing live action. If this is not possible, then please be as detailed as you can about which effect you are responsible for and whether or not you did the final integration. If there is effects work in the shot that you are not responsible for, document this in your breakdown. If there are live action effects in the shot, make sure to point this out too. The clearer it is to us what you did and how you did it, the easier it is for us to assess your skills.

Summary of Position

Models and/or dresses sets and props for computer animated films. Works closely with technical leads and art directors to create fully realized environments. Blends technical and creative expertise to create and enhance the aesthetic of the film.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

– Works with the technical leads to fulfill the production designer’s vision of a film.
– Creates architectural and organic looking models and environments, using both manual and procedural techniques.
– Reviews and revises work with the Production Designer, Technical Leads and Director.
– Creates clean and efficient assets and supports downstream departments.
– Produces clear and concise documentation as necessary.

Background, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required at Minimum:

– A strong understanding of composition, form, physical motion, weight, balance and texture is required.
– Experience in efficiently modeling Organic and Architectural forms.
– Ablility to create primary, secondary and tertiary assets, with appropriately modeled complexity for each.
– Experience with high-end modeling and animation systems such as Maya, Modo, XSI, Houdini or 3DStudioMax is required.
– Experience in film, video games, architecture or other graphics production experience is strongly preferred.
– Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
– Must be able to work alone or collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure.
– Must be able to follow art direction but also demonstrate initiative.

For Modeling Positions:

– Modelers will be required to rig set elements, such as simple bends and lattice deformations.
– Skill and experience in Maya, ZBrush, 3D-Coat and Mudbox is a strong plus.
– Knowledge of shading is a plus, especially UVs, topological dependencies and understanding of displacement.
– Knowledge of Houdini is a plus.

For Set Dressing Positions:

– Skill in the construction of various environments, both architectural and organic.
– Ability to refine a shot’s composition by adjusting the set’s elements to camera.
– Strong compositional skills and an awareness of how to support story though set design.
– Ability to follow art direction and independently solve creative problems.
– Ability to collaborate with modeling and shading to create efficient sets.
– Required to support needs of downstream departments: Camera, Animation, and Lighting.
– Required to shepherd the complexity of a set by appropriately culling assets and adjusting level of detail per-shot.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

– Skills in both areas – modeling and set dressing – are a strong plus.
– Skill and experience in one or more other areas of CG production: layout, shading, lighting, FX, and/or rendering is a plus.
– Programming skills in a scripting language (e.g. Mel or Python) are a plus.
– Education in Art, Architecture, Computer Science or Photography is preferred.
