Job Description

Rainmaker is looking for Creature TDs to join in the excitement at our studio! We are hiring for both our CG animated feature film and for our direct DVD project. We are looking for someone who is experienced, enthusiastic and all around fantastic! The Creature TD is responsible for evaluating the needs of the animation and simulation departments. He/She must assist in the development of a production ready process for creature rigging and simulation. And in order to meet the expectations of the animation and simulation supervisors, the creation of effective controls for rigging and simulation is essential. PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Must have an in-depth of modeling, animation and character rigging and methodology. He/she must be able to create optimal tools that can facilitate the animator’s work.
Devises and innovates methods of working with skeletons, modeling geometry and weighting that meet the project’s creative objectives.
Collaborates with the animation team in the testing of characters and provides timely solutions to any technical of performance related issues.
Attends regular production and department meetings.
Develops and maintains leading-edge proprietary tools/plugins/scripts.
Completes assignments on schedule.
Supports and integrates the values of Rainmaker that being a commitment to innovation, creativity, professionalism and inspiration.
Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, other staff members, partners and clients.
Additional duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience is preferred.
Advanced degree in Computing Science, Mathematics, Physics or related disciplines is an asset.

DVD Production

2-3+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline preferred however not required.

Feature Film Production

4-6+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Working knowledge of geometry creation, weighting and skeleton rigging.
Production knowledge of Maya, Python, MentalRay and MEL required.
Basic knowledge of UNIX/Linux, procedural and object-oriented programming languages.
Ability to create script in Python allowing for automation of specific tasks.
Basic artistic skills; demonstrable ability to make creative and aesthetic judgment calls.
Basic knowledge of CG Feature Animation.
Ability to communicate and/or demonstrate ideas. Practices attentive and active listening. Incorporates feedback and direction received from the Lead, Supervisor and/or Director of Production Technology.
Open to and encourages feedback and new initiatives. Shares information and techniques with team members.

Creature FX TD

Job Description

We are looking for a Creature FX TD to work on our direct to DVD project! At Rainmaker we value a professional approach to all of our work, and strive to maintain a culture built on respect, creativity, and community.

Under the guidance of the Lead Creature FX TD and/or Creature FX Supervisor, the Creature FX TD is responsible for creating secondary animation such as hair and cloth simulation.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible for the setup of simulation assets within existing pipeline for hair and cloth. Also the setup of prototype or development assets for testing of new procedures and workflows.
Runs shots for hair and cloth, including tuning of shot attributes, custom shot setup and hair and cloth shot finaling.
Takes direction and feedback from the Supervisor or Director in dailies to establish character look and movement.
Devises and innovates methods of working with rigs, nCloth and dynamics that meet production requirements.
Evaluates any issues that may arise in the setup of creatures and devises efficient solutions.
Collaborates with the Animation Director in the testing of characters and provides timely solutions to problems that are discovered.
Provides support and documentation for tools created.
Attends regular production and department meetings.
Maintains leading-edge proprietary tools/plugins/scripts.

Experience with various 3D packages. Knowledge of Linux preferred.
Basic knowledge of CG Feature Animation.

Under the guidance of the Lead or Department Supervisor, on a CG animated film, the Creature Facial TD is responsible for providing facial shapes, rigging and weighting of characters.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Tasked with building a range of facial expressions, the Creature Facial TD designs and maintains facial rigs.
He/she has an in-depth knowledge of modeling and animation and must be able to create optimal tools which facilitate the Animator’s work.
Supports Animators with rig issues and works with TD’s and Developers on character rig optimization.
Creates scripts in Python allowing for automation of specific tasks.
Provides support and documentation for tools created.
Meets or exceeds the deadlines as set out by the Production and Rigging schedules.
Interprets and implements notes and feedback form the Lead in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
Attends regular production and department meetings.
Maintains leading-edge proprietary tools/plugins/scripts.
Maintains contacts with academia/industry to keep current on new research and recent developments. Reads relevant journal, conference and technical articles.

On a CG animated film, the Creature TD Supervisor is responsible for evaluating the needs of the Modeling and Animation departments as it pertains to character articulation and deformation. The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing Creature TD Supervisor oversees the writing of tools and creation of rigs which enable the animators to create animation per the project’s creative objectives and artistic complexity.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Creature TD Supervisor oversees the creation of tools that facilitate animation production. While collaborating closely with the Design, Modeling and Animation teams, he/she guides how optimal performance objectives can be met through the way the rigs are developed and set up.
Oversees the development and application of skeletons, modeling geometry and weighting that fulfill the project’s creative objects.
Collaborates with that Animation team in the testing of characters and provides timely solutions to any technical or performance related issues. Responsible for evaluating any issues that arise in the rigging and enveloping of creatures and devises efficient solutions.
Assists in the development of a creature pipeline for film and DVD productions.
Assigns tasks to Creature TDs per their expertise and strengths.
Responsible for performance management and TD’s reviews.
Oversees the team in the development and/or modification of tools used within the department including scripting and writing tools to facilitate the rigging process.
Ability to prioritize completion of tasks with the goal to facilitate optimal work flow in the production pipeline as it pertains to animation production.
Motivates, mentors and supports the crew to consistently strive towards excellence.
Interprets, implements and facilitates notes and feedback from the Director, Art Director, Visual Effects Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Modeling and Animation Supervisors in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
Provides secondary technical support training as needed.
Provides and manages training for new hires.
Attends regular production and department meetings.
Develops leading-edge proprietary tools/plugins/scripts.
Interacts with commercial vendors with respect to technical issues affecting proprietary tools, etc.
Maintains contacts with academia/industry to keep current on new research and recent developments.
Completes assignments on schedule. Prioritizes task completion in coordination with production, technical animators and technical support staff.
