Job Description

We are looking for Lighting Artists for a Canadian Animated Feature! So if you’re up for the challenge, have industry experience and want to be part of Rainmaker, then you should apply! As a Lighting Artist you’ll be tasked with lighting shots from start to finish as they evolve from preliminary lighting through final renders.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Under the leadership of the Lighting Supervisor and/or Leads, the Lighting Artist lights shots/sequences based on the rigs created by the Principal, Lead or Supervisor.
Ability to work within the lighting and rendering pipeline and capable of troubleshooting common rendering and lighting technical issues.
Interprets and implements notes and feedback form the Supervisor or Lead in a timely and quantitatively acceptable way.
Collaborates with Surfacing Team in achieving the desired look and establishing the production design complexity and lighting behavioural consistency as it pertains to characters, props and environments.
Collaborates with FX Artists to test efficacy of the visual effects, modifying lighting as necessary.
Delivers assignments per project’s schedule.
Adheres to digital file management protocols.
Supports and integrates the values of Rainmaker that being a commitment to innovation, creativity, professionalism and inspiration.
Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, staff members and clients.
Additional duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience required.

TV/DVD Production

2-3+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to hone in on crafting a variety of lighting styles as necessitated by shot/sequences in a given project. Experience in photography is an asset.
Strong understanding of principles of lighting (such as choice of light, placement of the light source, its direction and how to create the desired effect such as contrast and shadows).
Ability to apply knowledge of digital 3D animation, special effects and lighting. A demonstrated understanding of compositing principles and compositing software such as Nuke.
Knowledge of Maya and rendering software such as Renderman and/or Mentalray. Ability to script is an asset.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the areas of rendering, lighting, shading and compositing.
Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
Open to and encourages feedback and new initiatives. Shares information and techniques with team members.
Solid work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to work under pressure. Self motivated and pro-active. Consistently strives to expand knowledge base.

Is your specialization the articulation of character animation? Are you part of the rhythm nation? Are you looking for a new sensation? Okay, enough 90s music reference. Let’s get back to the issue at hand: rigging. We are looking for a Rigging Artist to join us here at Rainmaker! As a Rigging Artist you will set up the articulation and deformation systems of characters, props and vehicles and present those fickle and lovely animators with systems that they can utilize to create animated magic. We need someone who is going to be hands on, jump right in and tackle any challenges. If you are interested, then you should apply!

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Create advanced character rigs and develop innovative methods to meet project objectives.
Collaborate with animation to come up with creative solutions to technical and performance related issues.
Develop and maintain proprietary tools.
Attend and contribute to regular production and department meetings.
Test rigs to ensure they meet or exceed both technical and performance specifications.
Develop new rig modules that adhere to the Rainmaker pipeline requirements.
Use tracking software to document the status of tasks and communicate with project team members.
Provide estimates for rigging tasks and work with production to ensure schedules can be met.
Identify and provide potential solutions for any potential problems early in production.
Mentor more junior artists and help to nurture a creative and collaborative environment.
Provide feedback to the modeling/surfacing department to ensure assets will meet deformation requirements.
Keep up to date with the latest rigging techniques and trends.
Complete tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
Interact with colleagues, staff, partners and clients in a respectful and professional manner at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

3+ years of rigging experience working in a professional environment.
Degree and/or diploma in fine art or animation or equivalent work experience.
Computer Science, Mathematics degree a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Expert in human and animal anatomy/motion including facial expressions and mouthshapes.
Foundation in traditional art, a good eye for form, weight and movement.
Strong understanding of animation principles, techniques and styles.
Working knowledge of animation production pipelines.
Working knowledge of Python and OOP.
Strong technical and creative problem solving skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Expert at manipulating geometry through standard deformation techniques.
Solid modelling skills and experience with corrective shape sculpting.
Ability to communicate and/or demonstrate ideas in a concise way.
Practices active listening and incorporates feedback and direction received from Leadsand Supervisors.
Open to and encourages new initiatives, shares information and techniques with teammembers.
Able to quickly adapt to changes in production and prioritize tasks.
Solid work ethic and positive attitude. Works well under pressure. Self­-motivated andproactive.

Environment/World Builder

Job Description

The dream has become a reality…We are virtually on the cusp of starting early production phases of ReBoot: The Guardian Code! Mainframe will once again push the creative boundaries of entertainment with this new CG/live-action series. We are looking for a talented Environment/World Builders! We need artists to design dramatic and production friendly assets for our newly ReBoot world.
Under the guidance of the Environment/World Builder Supervisor and the Lead Environment/World Builder, the Environment/World Builder is responsible for helping bring the creative vision of the Director and Art Director to life. The Environment Artist constructs the 360 degree worlds within a game engine in which the characters live using assets created by the Modeling and Surfacing Departments in conjunction with assets from the Technical Artists.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Reassembles worlds or builds new ones using the assets provided by the Modeling and Surfacing Departments in conjunction with assets from the Technical Artists.
Creates and maintains blueprint construction and event scripts.
With guidance, lights the world and characters true to the artistic vision and within technical limits.
Edits and places FX and AI assets into the Unreal world.
Partners with the Design team to ensure game engine scenes are optimal and meet the production’s quality level.
Works with the Layout Department to ensure the show conforms to the storyboards.
Works with Art Director to ensure the lighting, sets and FX are in line with the aesthetic.
Reviews final shots/scenes to ensure environments, lighting, blueprint scripts FX and AI are behaving as they should, and adjust accordingly.
Completes assignments on schedule.
Adhere to digital file management protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience is preferred.

Production

2-3+ years of experience working in game production with at least one shipped game.
Experience working in animation is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Highly motivated, pro-active, with a solid work ethic and positive attitude.
Solid knowledge of the production process and pipeline.
Proficiency in using Maya and Unreal 4 or a relevant game engine is required.
Knowledge of animation production in relation to shot creation and storytelling.
Knowledge of current industry engines and pipelines
Must have strong skills in a game engine with at least one of the following: Modeling/Surfacing, FX Lighting or Set-Dressing using textures, props and dynamically placed assets.
Strong technical skills in integrating environments with next generation toolsets such as scene lighting, environment optimization and event triggering.
Traditional art background is an asset.
Ability to collaborate and facilitate feedback requested by executives and/or clients.
Ability to predict potential problems and troubleshoot as necessary.
Makes decisions in a timely manner.
Accepts accountability for own actions.
Creatively solves problems, eliminates roadblocks and focuses on issue at hand.
