Animation Director

The crew at Rainmaker is starting our next CG animated feature film!! POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the guidance of the Director, on a CG animated film, the Animation Director provides creative leadership to the animation team by example.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONIBILITY

Defines the creative style of a project’s animation.

Ensures that the animation team is motivated to achieve the highest standards possible within the parameters of the production plan.

Storyboard Artist

POSITION OVERVIEW

On a CG animated film, the Storyboard Artist’s role is to work with the Director or Head of Story to translate the script into a visual medium.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Under the leadership of the Head of Story and/or a Senior Storyboard Artist, a Storyboard Artist, using designs, translates script pages into storyboard panels.
Creates story sequences that reflect the emotional, action and or comedic intent of a scene/sequence.
Actively participates in brainstorming sessions to come up with story, emotional and comedic ideas.
Strong abilities to use staging, shot composition, screen direction and cutting for effective storytelling.
Focuses on continuity from shot-to-shot in his/her assigned sequence in addition to collaborating with other story artists to ensure continuity from sequence to sequence.
Depending on the project’s requirements, the Storyboard artist generates artwork ranging from thumbnails to digitally enhanced final storyboard panels.
Collaborates with editorial to provide materials be cut into the story reel.

Under the guidance of the Production Designer/Art Director, on a CG animated film, the Designer creates 2D and 3D designs and/or orthographics of characters, sets, vehicles and/or props depending on their area of expertise.

Lead FX Artist

Oversees the development of FX tools and rigs to be used by the FX department.
Oversees the creation of the project’s FX style/technique. He/she works closely with other departments such as the Lighting Department in order to ensure the behavioural consistency of FX in relation to character, props and environment set ups regardless of the complexity of the shot.
Collaborates with the creative leads and CG Supervisor to ensure all FX, lighting and rendering requirements are successfully and efficiently met within the confines of the project’s timeline and fiscal parameters.

So what is the Character Modeler accountable for? They create character models that support art and story concepts. May focus on developing technical drawings for model production. Utilizes modeling software to prepare and build character models. Writes, maintains and run scripts and model databases. Collaborates with Surfacing Supervisor in casting artists to create and apply textures based on their skill set.
Generates and applies textures with the goal of optimal performance while being mindful of effective and efficient use of production resources.
Provides input on artist’s performance review as needed.
Collaborates with the production management team to prioritize assignments pending production schedule.
Provides vision, feedback, motivation and encouragement to the team.
Collaborates with the Surfacing Supervisor to manage the workflow within the Surfacing Dept. in order to fulfill production schedule requirements on a weekly basis.
Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s) and/or Surfacing Supervisor in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
Adheres to digital file management protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:

Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience required.

DVD Production

3-5+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Superior expertise in UV mapping and texture layout using Maya.
Advanced proficiency using a variety of rendering tools including Mental Ray, Renderman, Maya, Mudbox and Nuke is required.
Excellent painting skills with an in-depth understanding of color theory and application.
Excellent sense of design and a keen eye for detail.
Advanced experience in advanced surfacing techniques such as global illumination and subsurface scattering.

Collaborates with modeling, lighting, rigging and effects teams to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
Quality checks that all elements are final, approved and ready for lighting department.

Pre-Visualization Artist

We are looking for talented Pre-Vis Artists to join our team. Lots is happening at Rainmaker and we need talented, eager people to work on our next CG feature film and for one of our DVD project.

We’ve been around for years, but with everything we are doing right now, we’ve got the excitement and bustle of a start-up! Being able to tell a story well is imperative for this role. We are looking for someone who really gets “it”, and can work closely with the Director to take the written story to the next step of the animation process. An artist who will really lead the visual representation and surprise us (in a good way!!) with wicked vision and creativity.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Creates story sequences in 3D by blocking in key character poses that reflect the emotional, action and/or comedic intent of a scene.
As necessary models proxy simple sets, props and characters. Determines and sets cameras using cinematography and staging skills.
Actively participates in brainstorming sessions to come up with creative ways to visualize story content.
Focuses on continuity from shot-to-shot in his/her assigned sequence in addition to collaborating with other Pre-visualization Artists to ensure continuity from sequence to sequence.
Collaborates with creative and technical staff, VFX Supervisor and/or CG Supervisor and/or stereoscopic supervisor to ensure animation feasibility within the confines of the schedule and budget.
Collaborates with Story Artists to ensure a smooth transition into 3D.
Collaborates with editorial to provide materials to be cut into the pre-visualization reel.
Collaborates with shot set-up and set dressing to ensure materials are prepared in a way that ensures a smooth transition into animation.

Proficiency in using Maya is required. Experience with Motion Builder, After Effects and Nuke is considered an asset.
Stereoscopic film making experience an asset.
