Job Summary

Reel FX, Inc. seeks Animation Pipeline Software Developers (multiple openings) to develop custom software applications and tools and to support the technical execution of an animated feature film project. Worksite for all openings of the Animation Software Developer positions are at ReelFX, Inc.’s Dallas, TX office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

• Works closely with the Technical Supervisor and production artists to support the technical execution of an animated feature film project;
• Help guide feature film animation projects through the production pipeline by writing new software tools, maintaining existing software tools, troubleshooting technical issues with three-dimensional (3D) scenes, and addressing technical challenges across all disciplines of the computer graphics (CG) pipeline;
• Facilitates production workflow efficiencies by performing software development (e.g. custom scripts using MEL and Python) in support of 3D applications (using Maya, 3ds Max, Nuke, Mari, Houdini) or production renderers (using Arnold, RenderMan, or VRay);
• Develops compiled plugins, utilities, and scripts that perform higher level functions outside the scope of a single 3D scene, codes against studio tool development standards and APIs;
• Provides high-level problem solving and detailed scene-file troubleshooting for 3D artists in the rendering of assets and shots in 3D applications including Maya, 3ds Max, Nuke, Mari, and Houdini;
• Develops custom shading models for RenderMan or Arnold;
• Develops custom data interchange utilities between surfacing packages such as Mari and 3D renderers including RenderMan or Arnold;
• Implements custom display drivers for OpenGL;
• Specifies and prototypes high-level production software tools and workflows;
• Works closely with other pipeline software developers to create and deliver studio-wide solutions for all CG departments;
• Collaborates with Technical Supervisor and CG Supervisor on production strategy and show-wide resource and support planning;
• Develops advanced studio tools that adhere to departmental standards, conventions, and APIs;
• Provides CG technical support for artists in all areas of production working in Maya, Nuke, Mari, and Houdini;
• Makes recommendations and contributes improvements to established software development standards;
• Develops architectural pipeline components and contributes to software development strategy; and,
• Works with artists to define scope of tools, serves as lead developer on mid-sized projects.

Education and Experience Requirements

This position requires a Master’s degree or the equivalent and one (1) year of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent and three (3) years of experience in lieu of a Master’s degree or the equivalent and one (1) year of experience.
