Job Summary

This is for our DALLAS studio location as well as freelance opportunities

We are currently hiring for our visually captivating animated feature, which tells a Romeo and Juliet style love story set against the Mexican “Day of the Dead” back drop, directed by Jorge Gutierrez (”El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera”) and produced by Guillermo del Toro!

We are looking for skilled artists who specialize in LIGHTING KEY PAINTING with a VISUAL DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND, to be part of a collaborative team of in-house and freelance artists.

Art Department Painters (Feature Animation) will be called upon to explore, create, execute and enhance artwork that will be used for lighting/compositing, color, surfacing and matte painting reference, and that informs all aspects of visual story telling for our film.

Duties and Responsibilities

Has developed a strong, production-ready workflow and a willingness to adapt that workflow as needed for speedy iterations

Excellent communicator, who is easily adaptable, takes direction well and is able to integrate feedback from the Art Director & Director efficiently and effectively

Demonstrates a passion for animated feature film visual development painting.

Positive, team player who works well with production crew members, including Director, Art Director/Production Designer, Production Management and other Artists across disciplines

Actively participates in technical and artistic problem solving

Self-managing — organized with solid time management skills. Must be able to identify and meet goals. Accountable for meeting productivity expectations and deadlines

Proven ability to execute production ready artwork— maintaining a consistent style and quality level as directed by the Art Director.

Able to both achieve highly detailed asset paintings for surfacing reference as well a looser, sequence based paintings that depict all aspects of character, prop & set lighting direction.

Uses studio’s web-based, artwork management tool for assignments and reviews/feedback.


Digital illustration skills with an advanced proficiency in Photoshop

Has an acute eye for color and can execute paintings that illustrate a strong grasp of color theory

Understands general lighting and story-telling principles and can adapt and apply those principles in a manner that takes CG shot lighting and theatrical lighting principles into account

Strong knowledge of surface texture and ability to render detailed paint work and texture guides that follow the unique art direction of the film

Can create color and lighting key paintings based on art direction and lighting principles

Can successfully address design-specific notes in paintings

Additional Skills:

Though not a requirement, candidates with additional skills in environment design would be considered a strong asset

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s (BA) degree in Fine Art, Computer Graphics or related field preferred or equivalent professional experience

Mid to Senior Level (5 years +) experience required (two or more feature film credits preferred)

Portfolio must explicitly illustrate the paint requirements and skills listed above for candidate to be considered
