Rigging Artist (Feature Animation)

Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Rigging Supervisor, this position is responsible for character, vehicle, and prop set up and designing rigs that allow for clean interaction during animation.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Must be able to rig advanced props, vehicles, sets and characters with an average amount supervision.
• Familiar with all rigging tools.
• Able to write average scripts using MEL and/or Python.
• Possess a solid understanding of how the module system works, including how to create a custom rig.
• Provide technical direction on models, so that by the time a model reaches the rigging phase it meets the technical requirements needed for the highest level of rigging and skinning.
• Work closely with Animators to develop rigs that will allow animators the full range of motion and acting that is called for by the story, as well as, a logical and easy to use control structure
• Communicate needs for custom tools, scripts, etc, to Rigging Supervisor, other Riggers, and TD’s. Assist in the planning and design, as well as developing the tools and scripts as needed.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of the Reel FX pipeline
• Communicate work status to Rigging Supervisor, and others, as required.
• Constantly be learning and experimenting with new techniques to better our process.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s (BA) degree from accredited four-year college or university or equivalent experience
• 2 years production experience
• A strong understanding of animation and modeling workflows
• A strong understanding of human and animal form and bio-mechanics.
• Ability to create rigs that allow for a full range of movement, with a logical, easy to use, and well thought out control structure.
• Excellent knowledge of maya, with a strong understanding of the dependency graph, utility nodes, and the use of expressions. A working knowledge of MEL is a must. A working knowledge of Python is preferred. Knowledge of the C++ API is not required, but is a distinct advantage.
• A general understanding of the principles of animation. Must be able to think like an animator when considering how rigs will move. Prior animation experience is a plus.
• Ability to work in a team environment, possess strong communication skills, exhibit a high level of motivation.
• Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
• Able to multi-task and prioritize
• Able to thrive in a high pressure, deadline oriented environment
• Able to follow directions well

Matte Painter (Feature Animation)

Job Description

THIS IS FOR OUR DALLAS LOCATION!!!

Working with the Lead Matte Painter, Production Designer & Art Director to create matte paintings (eg. 2D background mattes or projection artwork for geometry / paintings / plates) for a 3D stereoscopic animated feature film.

Duties and Responsibilities

• To create the 2D painted backgrounds and necessary 3D geometry required to complete any 3D environments, sets or scenes on the film, while working with the design, layout and modeling departments
• To troubleshoot and use talents to create visually stunning backgrounds which match and marry to the film’s style and 3D requirements, using direction giving by the Lead Matte Painter, Art Director and Production Designer.

Education and Experience Requirements

• 5+ years of experience creating matte paintings for animated feature films
• Strong ability to paint light and mood while matching style keys
• Strong skills in painting, drawing, composition, color matching.
• Ability to create matte paintings stylistically using 2D and 3D applications
• Intermediate computer literacy, extensive skills in Photoshop
• Experience with Nuke & Maya is a big plus
• Knowledge of Mac and PC platforms
• Ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently while working within the framework of a team
• Ability to problem solve
• Ability to meet tight deadlines
• Familiar with Stereoscopic digital process

Job Description

We are currently hiring for our visually captivating animated feature, which tells a Romeo and Juliet style love story set against the Mexican “Day of the Dead” back drop, directed by Jorge Gutierrez (”El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera”) and produced by Guillermo del Toro!
We are looking for TD candidates to join and work with collaborative in-house team.

The Technical Director is a production position. The Technical Director works closely with the production Supervising Technical Director and production artists to support the technical execution of a project. Technical directors guide projects through the production pipeline by validating production assets, troubleshooting scenes, writing tools, and addressing technical challenges across all disciplines of the CG pipeline. The successful candidates have the ability to identify deficiencies in the technical process and to research, design, and implement solutions to enhance production workflow. The technical director must work well in a team-oriented production environment, where daily proactive problem solving and technical innovation are expected.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Works closely with the production supervisors in the early strategy and technical setup of a project in order to clearly define workflow, optimize efficiencies, and enable fluid handoff of assets between departments for each stage of the pipeline.
• Troubleshoots problems across all pipeline disciplines: examples include validation of modeling and texturing integrity and performance, Asset (characters, props and environments) development and publishing, animation issues, lighting and rendering problems.
• Studies issue patterns and trends, identifies common technical problems in a production, and recommends/implements new processes or workflows to address those problems.
• Identifies efficiency tool development needs and works directly with leads, artists, and the Pipeline Tools group to define requirements, develop and test prototypes, and develop end solutions.
• Locates, tests, and diagnoses issues with rendering workflow or output, including the maintenance and troubleshooting of shaders and tools.
• Monitors the handoffs between departments and identifies problematic areas or process bottle-necks: examples include asset publish upstream from departments, ingestion and management of animation data, and integration of character and visual effects into lighting scenes.
• Collaborates with other technical directors and software developers, attends regular production technology team meetings and serves an active role in the direction of the pipeline.

Education and Experience Requirements

• General production experience in the following areas: Layout, Animation, Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Fur, Cloth, Effects, Lighting, and Compositing.
• Thorough knowledge of CG production workflow and methodologies.
• Thorough knowledge of Maya, Mel or Python.
• Knowledge of Houdini, Python and Vex a plus.
• Thorough knowledge of UNIX/Linux, procedural and object-oriented programming languages, as well as shell/Perl/Python scripting; shader and plug-in writing a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of personalities at varied levels of technical understanding.
• Engages artists with a positive attitude and encourages feedback on solutions and actively implements solutions that recognize artist workflow and interface concerns.
• Ability to manage time and balance priorities amidst the pressures of our busy, deadline-driven industry.
