Lighting Artists

Rising Sun Pictures is currently seeking talented Mid Lighting Artists to join our growing team.

Employment Period: Range of short term contracts with a June/July start through to October/November 2017.
Location: Adelaide, Australia. These positions are open to Australian and international applicants. Visa and relocation assistance provided where applicable.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to RSP’s lighting leads, our lighters are responsible for the creation of wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority.
Although RSP runs a Houdini / Mantra / Arnold pipeline, applicants with broad exposure to any industry standard 3d packages and renderers should apply for this position.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. You have previously lit and rendered wide ranging assets generated by Houdini effects artists, modelers, texture artists and animators.
Your ability to own your work is highly regarded by your previous employers. As a professional lighting artist, you provide confidence to production because you have absolute clarity in what is expected of you in terms of lighting consistency and shot delivery.

Responsibilities

Using Houdini and SolidAngle’s Arnold, light and render a variety of small and large scale cg elements including props, models, environments, crowds, creatures and effects.
Provide solutions for techniques such as subsurface scattering and physically plausible shading.
Use HDRI information to match live action lighting elements.
Strong emphasis on optimising and troubleshooting renders, providing feedback to departments upstream and render wranglers.
Work closely with compositors ensuring the renders you provide are consistent with their expectation.
Follow creative & technical briefs with regard to the production schedule.
Take ownerships of all notes and feedback relating to your shots.
Iterate your work as directed by your lead and within the allocated resources.
Ensure your lead and coordinator are kept up to date of any issues that may hinder your ability to reach a deadline.
Develop and maintain a working relationship with peers assisting them when requested.
Actively mentor and develop less experienced team members.
Maintain consistency across sequences and shots. Adopt a methodical approach to lighting setups.
Provide clear and accurate time estimates for all work assigned.
Collaborate with supervisors, compositors, effects and environment artists in establishing robust and consistent handovers.
Review your work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Seek feedback when renders fail to match delivery expectation.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussions and a positive work ethic.
Please note, RSP operates a Maya / Houdini pipeline in a Linux system environment.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 4 years professional lighting experience in VFX, working on live-action feature films.
Applicants demonstrating shots lit & rendered using Houdini’s Mantra or Arnold preferred.
Proficient at Compositing in Nuke.
Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a delivery focused work environment.
Real world understanding of physics, math, proportion, depth, colour, and of course lighting.
Expert organisational skills.
Technical and creative problem solving with a can-do mindset.
Visual Effects, Fine Art, Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics or related tertiary qualification may be required for international applicants.

Head of Production Technology

Rising Sun Pictures is currently seeking an experienced Software Development Manager / Head of Production Technology to develop, manage and deliver our core software Pipeline for the delivery of projects. Exceptional leadership and project management skills are considered critical qualities for successful applicants of this role.

Position Overview

Our pipeline consists of multiple off the shelf software – Maya, Houdini, Arnold, Nuke and others, spanning multiple workstation and compute nodes, principally running Linux and Open Source software. The Pipeline team is comprised of 10 developers, than design and deploy the systems, bringing together these tools into a coherent workflow which underpins our ability to deliver cutting edge visuals for projects such as X-Men, Alien and Thor: Ragnarok.

This position is responsible for the vision, implementation, research and maintenance of company software development tasks, while ensuring all plans are made with consideration of future growth, and align with company strategy and direction. In this role, you will be responsible for outlining and implementing an approach which represents the most efficient way to execute work. You will work closely with creative and technical supervisors, who will provide experience, insight and advice; highlighting areas of concern and improvement as needed.

Ever conscious of client and stakeholder requirements, the software development manager creates and executes the software development strategy required to meet the rapidly evolving needs of visual effects production. The software development manager leads the pipeline team, and is responsible for creating and maintaining appropriate levels of capacity to fulfil the company’s production requirements.

Responsibilities

Working with key stakeholders, define the software development strategy and key milestones for the company and proactively drive global efficiencies
Implement the software development strategy
Implement best practices and set quality standards for development processes and procedures
Manage diverse software development projects and maintain team resources
Keep internal clients of the status of software development projects, through regular updates
Provide support and documentation of all internally developed software and maintain communication with external software vendors
Working with key staff throughout the company, implement and maintain structured research and development

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 10+ years experience working in senior software development positions
Minimum 5+ years experience in leading and managing a department of software developers
Experience running change management projects
High level of experience as an agile scrum master
In-depth, up-to-date knowledge of industry best practice and trends
Confident with programming tools such as compilers, debuggers, and version control systems
Expert level knowledge of writing code in Python, plus other programming languages such as C++, and MEL Scripting
Experience using unix based operating systems such as Linux and OS X

Senior Compositors

Rising Sun Pictures is currently seeking applications from Senior Compositors to join our Adelaide based team.

Employment periods: 3 and 6 month positions including long-term positions, commencing June to July 2017.
Location: Adelaide, Australia. This position is open to Australian and international applicants. Visa and relocation assistance provided where applicable.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Head of Compositing, you will be responsible for creating multi-layered composites for live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic, live-action composites (rather than stylised full-CG composites) in their portfolio, will have their application reviewed with priority. RSP is a Nuke based effects facility operating in a Linux system environment. All candidates must have extensive experience with Nuke and be comfortable working in Linux and using command line tools.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. You have previously been responsible for creating complex composites that incorporate naturalistic effects simulation, environments and matte painting and native live action elements.
Your ability to own your delivery is highly regarded by your previous supervisors. As a professional compositor, you continually provide confidence to your production team through regular updates. You maintain clarity and focus when crunch time hits and know what is expected of you. You maintain a good working relationship with artists that are delivering to you from other departments and are proactive in resolving issues that may delay deliveries.

Responsibilities

Create complex multi-layered composites from mixed sources that set the creative and technical benchmarks for your team.
Work with your lead to implement sound production workflows, and supervise more junior team members if required.
Lead sequences or small teams from turnover & Look Dev to delivery as required.
Interpret needs, schedules, briefs and feedback, setting priorities and demanding timeliness of yourself and others.
Create Nuke scrips that integrate efficiently into the compositing pipeline.
Work in a manner that allows other compositing team members to pick up your work if necessary.
Use your well-developed understanding of colourspaces of film and digital formats, and expert eye, to achieve stunning and complex composites.
Work within RSP’s colour pipeline, adhering to the colour workflow as outlined by the project.
Adapt your comp setups as the brief evolves, diagnosing and resolving any issues with your own Nuke script.
Review and QC your work for internal and external delivery ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Ensure visual continuity is upheld across shots and sequences.
Work with lighting team members as necessary in order to meet compositing objectives.
Develop and maintain a working relationship with 2d and 3d artists and technicians.
Contribute to creative and technical conversations, with a view to raising the quality level of the final image.
Manage your workload. Advise your lead/head of dept of any obstacles which may affect delivery quality, timeliness or budget.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussions and a positive work ethic.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 7 years creating high-end composites for live-action feature films.
Expert knowledge of Nuke and a thorough understanding of the math behind comp operations, especially Nuke scripting and tool development.
Utilitarian knowledge of other discipline software such as Maya, Houdini and industry standard tracking software.
Superior level of attention to detail and a strong understanding of colour theory, LUT’S, composition and both film and digital capture formats.
Real world understanding of physics, math, proportion, depth, light and colour.
Expert organisational skills, maintaining a calm and professional demeanour in a delivery focused work environment.
Technical and creative problem solving with a can-do mindset.
Working knowledge of the VFX pipeline and entire post-production process, including interdepartmental dependencies and hand over processes.
