Effects Technical Directors (Houdini)

We are currently seeking experienced Houdini Effects TD’s to join our team.

Employment periods: 4-9 month contracts available, commencing between August 2014 and January 2015. Most positions are expected to finish up May/June 2015
Location: Adelaide, Australia. These positions are open to Australian and international applicants.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to RSP’s effects leads, you will be responsible for creating wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic effects work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority. RSP is a Houdini based effects facility operating in a Linux system environment. All candidates must be have deep experience with Houdini and be comfortable with Linux.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. Using Houdini, you have previously been responsible for creating wide ranging naturalistic effects simulation including destruction, water, fire, procedural environments and character effects.
Your ability to own your delivery is highly regarded by your previous supervisors. As a professional effects artist and effects technical director, you provide confidence to the production team because you maintain absolute clarity in what is expected of you. You are the artist who seeks to understand and subsequently nail the brief.

Responsibilities

Create and deliver effects; including rigid body dynamics, fluid simulations, cloth simulations and generic particle effects, that match the creative and technical brief.
Tightly adhere to production schedule and deliver to key milestones, presenting your work-in-progress daily.
Work with animation, lighting & compositing as necessary in order to meet FX animation objectives.
Adapt your effects as the brief evolves.
Diagnose and resolve issues with your own Houdini and Python scripts.
Review and QA your work for internal and external delivery ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Assemble and / or modify complex shaders.
Create consistent lighting and effects render passes for compositing.
Create effects composites in order to demonstrate the effect relative to the plate.
Work in a manner that allows other effects team members to pick up your work if necessary.
Contribute to creative and technical conversations, with a view to raising the quality level of the final image.
Expect additional delegated tasks from effects supervisor and leads.
Manage your workload. Advise your lead of any obstacles which may affect delivery quality, timeliness or budget.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussions and a positive work ethic.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 5 years professional experience creating high-end effects for live-action feature films.
Expert user of Houdini.
Complex shading and render experience using Houdini’s Mantra.
Utilitarian knowledge of other discipline software such as Maya, Nuke and industry standard tracking software.
Strong coding experience using Python and hscript.
Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a delivery focused work environment.
Real world understanding of physics, math, proportion, depth and colour.
Understanding of naturalistic light and motion with a focus on dynamics and natural phenomenon.
Superior level of attention to detail and strong eye for aesthetic composition.

Lighting Technical Directors

Reporting directly to RSP’s lighting leads, our lighters are responsible for the creation of wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. You have previously lit and rendered wide ranging assets generated by Houdini effects artists, modelers, texture artists and animators.
Your ability to own your work is highly regarded by your previous employers. As a professional lighting artist, you provide confidence to production because you have absolute clarity in what is expected of you in terms of lighting consistency and shot delivery.

Responsibilities

Using Houdini’s Mantra, light and render a variety of small and large scale cg elements including, props, models, environments, crowds, creatures and effects.
Create shaders under direction from leads and the look dev department.
Provide solutions for techniques such as subsurface scattering and physically plausible shading.
Use HDRI information to match live action lighting elements.
Work closely with compositors ensuring the renders you provide are consistent with their expectation.
Follow creative & technical briefs with regard to the production schedule.
Take ownerships of all notes and feedback relating to your shots.
Iterate your work as directed by your lead and within the allocated resources.
Ensure your lead and coordinator are kept up to date of any issues that may hinder your ability to reach deadline.
Develop and maintain a working relationship with peers assisting them when requested.
Maintain consistency across sequences and shots. Adopt a methodical approach to lighting setups.
Provide clear and accurate time estimates for all work assigned.
Collaborate with supervisors, compositors, effects and environment artists in establishing robust and consistent handovers.
Review your work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Seek feedback when renders fail to match delivery expectation.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussions and a positive work ethic.
Please note, RSP operates a Maya / Houdini Mantra pipeline in a Linux system environment.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 4 years professional effects artist experience on live-action feature films.
Applicants demonstrating shots lit & rendered using Houdini’s Mantra preferred.
Proficient at Compositing in Nuke.
Strong technical directing and coding experience (such as Python and/or C++).
Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a delivery focused work environment.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to RSP’s compositing leads, you will be responsible for creating multi-layered composites for live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic composites (over stylised composites) in their portfolio, will have their application reviewed with priority. RSP is a Nuke based effects facility operating in a Linux system environment. All candidates must have extensive experience with Nuke and be comfortable working in Linux.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. You have previously been responsible for creating complex composites that incorporate naturalistic effects simulation, environments and matte painting and native live action elements.
Your ability to own your delivery is highly regarded by your previous supervisors. As a professional compositor, you continually provide confidence to your production team through regular updates. You maintain clarity and focus when crunch time hits and know what is expected of you. You maintain a good working relationship with artists that are delivering to you from other departments and are proactive in resolving issues that may delay deliveries.

Responsibilities

Create complex multi-layered composites from mixed sources.
Use your well-developed understanding of colour space [film formats] and expert eye, to achieve stunning and complex composites.
Work with lighting team members as necessary in order to meet compositing objectives.
Adapt your comp setups as the brief evolves.
Review and QA your work for internal and external delivery ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Assemble and / or modify other compositors work.
Ensure continuity is upheld across shots and sequences.
Develop and maintain a working relationship with 2d and 3d artists and technicians.
Work in a manner that allows other compositing team members to pick up your work if necessary.
Contribute to creative and technical conversations, with a view to raising the quality level of the final image.

Asset Supervisor

Reporting directly to sequence supervisors, the Asset Supervisor will supervise, monitor, direct and influence wide-ranging aspects of high-end asset creation across multiple projects. This position is directly responsible for ensuring the delivery of shot ready assets from the disciplines of modeling, texturing and rigging. RSP is a Maya, Houdini and Nuke based software effects facility running in a Linux system environment. Demonstrated strength with each software is a significant criteria for applicants.
Your previously held positions are likely to have been modelling supervisor, CG supervisor or similar. You are an expert people manager, a natural team player and forward thinking professional. Drawing on your extensive digital effects knowledge, you respond confidently to complex VFX problems, which in turn push quality benchmarks to the highest level. You implement solutions that improve efficiency at a facility level. In collaboration with the pipeline group, drive and prioritise asset pipeline and work flow improvements.
Work with the animation supervisor and creature team.
Work with the layout and scene department to provide assets in line with blocking and animation requirements.
Work with the lighting and look-dev teams to ensure effects assets can be successfully lit and rendered.
Work closely with the production on setting delivery schedule and quality standards.
Review all work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Set discipline and quality standards by leading through example and regularly providing feedback to your team.
Ensure your leads are effectively running their teams, providing guidance to resolve issues in the moment.

This position is directly responsible for ensuring disciplines of modeling, texturing, matte painting & rigging can create realistic environment assets for high-end feature film. RSP’s environment team use a suite of tools including Mari, Photoshop, Houdini, Nuke, ZBrush, Maya & 3DEqualizer. Demonstrated experience with each software is a fundamental pre-requisite for successful applicants.
Your previously held positions are likely to have included leadership or supervisory matte or environment roles, 2d/3d or modeling supervisor, senior environment TD, etc. You are an expert people manager, a natural team player and forward thinking professional. Ensure assets are created in-line with the creative brief and supportive of render optimisation and reuse.
In collaboration with the pipeline group, compositing, lighting and modelling, drive and prioritise environment pipeline and work flow improvements ensuring seamless handover between departments.
Match Lidar scans and on-set photographic references to create integrated environments.
Work with the compositing leads to secure coverage maps to assist in determining matte painting requirements.
Provide lighting teams with QA’d assets that can be successfully lit and rendered.
Work closely with production on delivery schedules, timeliness and quality standards.
Review and approve all work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Set discipline and quality assurance standards by regularly providing feedback to your team on the improvement of assets created.
Ensure matte painting and modeling leads are effectively running their own teams, providing guidance and advice on resolving issues as they arise.
