Lighting Artist

We are currently seeking a talented Mid Lighting Artist to join us on a number of exciting feature films.

Employment period: 6 month contract, with an immediate start.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to RSP’s lighting leads, our lighters are responsible for the creation of wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority.

Although RSP runs a Houdini / Mantra / Arnold pipeline, applicants with broad exposure to any industry standard 3d packages and renderers should apply for this position.

You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. You have previously lit and rendered wide ranging assets generated by Houdini effects artists, modelers, texture artists and animators.

Your ability to own your work is highly regarded by your previous employers. As a professional lighting artist, you provide confidence to production because you have absolute clarity in what is expected of you in terms of lighting consistency and shot delivery.

Responsibilities

Using Houdini and SolidAngle’s Arnold, light and render a variety of small and large scale cg elements including props, models, environments, crowds, creatures and effects.
Provide solutions for techniques such as subsurface scattering and physically plausible shading.
Use HDRI information to match live action lighting elements.
Strong emphasis on optimising and troubleshooting renders, providing feedback to departments upstream and render wranglers.
Work closely with compositors ensuring the renders you provide are consistent with their expectation.
Follow creative & technical briefs with regard to the production schedule.
Take ownerships of all notes and feedback relating to your shots.
Iterate your work as directed by your lead and within the allocated resources.
Ensure your lead and coordinator are kept up to date of any issues that may hinder your ability to reach a deadline.
Develop and maintain a working relationship with peers assisting them when requested.
Actively mentor and develop less experienced team members.
Maintain consistency across sequences and shots. Adopt a methodical approach to lighting setups.
Provide clear and accurate time estimates for all work assigned.
Collaborate with supervisors, compositors, effects and environment artists in establishing robust and consistent handovers.
Review your work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Seek feedback when renders fail to match delivery expectation.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussions and a positive work ethic.
Please note, RSP operates a Maya / Houdini pipeline in a Linux system environment.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 4 years professional lighting experience in VFX, working on live-action feature films.
Applicants demonstrating shots lit & rendered using Houdini’s Mantra or Arnold preferred.
Proficient at Compositing in Nuke.
Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a delivery focused work environment.
Real world understanding of physics, math, proportion, depth, colour, and of course lighting.

Employment period: 12 month contract with an immediate start.

Position Overview

This position will work under direction of the Head of Production Technology to execute the software development strategy. As a Software Developer you will work on a variety of projects across a range of disciplines. Successful applicants will have the ability to demonstrate a strong proficiency in software development, over any specific technology or skill set, as Software Development principles remain the same in any discipline.

As a Software Developer at RSP, you may work solely on smaller projects, and as part of a team on larger projects. In all cases there will be the opportunity to take ownership of your work by clearly planning, executing and validating your development against the requirements of the project, and in many cases help define those requirements in the first place. You must work well with others and expect to have work delegated to you. You must be proactive and take responsibility for your work as you seek to solve problems rather than create them.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Head of Effects, you will be responsible for creating wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic effects work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority. RSP is a Houdini based effects facility operating in a Linux system environment. As a Senior, all candidates must have extensive experience with Houdini and be comfortable working in Linux and using command line tools.

You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. Using Houdini, you have previously been responsible for creating wide ranging naturalistic effects simulation including destruction, water, and fire.

Your ability to own your delivery is highly regarded by your previous supervisors. As a professional effects artist and effects technical director, you provide confidence to the production team because you maintain absolute clarity in what is expected of you. You are the artist who seeks to understand and subsequently nail the brief.

Responsibilities

Create and deliver effects; including effects simulation, and effects look development, that match the creative and technical brief.
Tightly adhere to production schedule and deliver to key milestones, presenting your work-in-progress daily.
Work with animation, lighting & compositing as necessary in order to meet FX animation objectives.
Adapt your effects as the brief evolves.
Diagnose and resolve issues with your own Houdini and Python scripts.
Review and QA your work for internal and external delivery ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Assemble and / or modify complex shaders.
Step into a lead position and lead other effects artists and/or sequences as required.
Create consistent caches & shaders of effects simulations for the lighting department.
Create consistent lighting and effects render passes for compositing.
Create effects composites in order to demonstrate the effect relative to the plate.
Work in a manner that allows other effects team members to pick up your work if necessary.
Contribute to creative and technical conversations, with a view to raising the quality level of the final image.
Actively mentor and develop less experienced team members.
Manage your workload. Advise the head of department of any obstacles which may affect delivery quality, timeliness or budget.

Strong scripting experience using Python.
Experience leading a team of effects artists for a sequence/show a plus.

Understanding of naturalistic light and motion with a focus on dynamics and natural phenomenon.

CG Supervisor

We are currently looking for an experienced CG Supervisor to join our supervisory team.

Employment period: Long term position, with an immediate start.

Position Overview

The CG Supervisor will supervise, monitor, direct and influence wide-ranging creative aspects of high-end VFX production across multiple projects. With a strong understanding of all disciplines within the VFX pipeline, you will be directly responsible for driving success across multiple departments.

You are an expert people manager, a natural team player and forward thinking professional. Your success comes from engaging all areas of VFX departments and through clear communication throughout a shows lifecycle. You implement solutions to improve the overall efficiency at a show level. Utilising available resources, you drive your team to consistently deliver a high quality end product within the allocated resources and to the satisfaction of VFX Supervisors.

This position will suit experienced CG Supervisors with strong VFX skills and wide ranging hands-on experience. The strength of your creative eye, excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills will all be highly regarded. Through your previous supervisory positions, you will have experience interfacing between the supervisory team and the artistic team.

Responsibilities

Manage, support and supervise key aspects of the CG pipeline including, but not limited to, FX, Lighting and Look Development, Animation and Creatures, Layout, Modelling etc.
Work closely with the 2D department to ensure assets created are utilised as intended with minimal excess assets created.
Create technical solutions to ensure deadlines are met in consideration of each projects financial and resource parameters.
Work with VFX Supervisors to ensure RSP delivers quality shots on time and on budget to the Client.
Ensure briefs, from the VFX Supervisors, are well understood by the Head of Departments, clarifying and expanding on details as requested.
Collaborate with the Head of Departments to set show-based technical directions and quality expectations to improve the images we make.
Set clear goals and expectations for Head of Departments through direct communication.
Work with production to outline scheduling and resource needs
Work constructively with staff in all positions at all levels of the Company. This requires the consistent and efficient use of influence, over role power.
Through regular communication with Head of Departments, maintain an ongoing awareness of the state of show assets and shots, maintaining an ongoing view of project health.
Mentor and actively develop less experienced team members.
Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussion and positive work ethic.

Required skills and experience

Minimum 8 years senior CG experience in successive 3D focused roles, including a minimum 4 years in the position of CG Supe/CG Lead, on live action feature films.
Extensive production experience with Shotgun.
Expert user of production ready software for 3D and 2D applications, such as Maya, Nuke, Houdini etc. N.B. RSP operates in a Linux system environment.
Have an understanding of/creative eye for photography/film-making, lighting, design and [animation] timing/storytelling.
Practical understanding of the entire production pipeline process.
Multi-disciplinary understanding derived from working within Effects, Lighting, Compositing and Asset Teams.
