Effects Technical Directors (Houdini)

Position Overview

Reporting directly to RSP’s effects leads, you will be responsible for creating wide ranging natural phenomena for a variety of live action feature films. Applicants presenting highly realistic effects work in their portfolio, will be reviewed with priority. RSP is a Houdini based effects facility operating in a Linux system environment. All candidates must be have deep experience with Houdini and be comfortable with Linux.
You are a professional artist who works collaboratively with your team and those working in other departments. You are an excellent time manager and forward thinker who delivers to schedule and to brief. Using Houdini, you have previously been responsible for creating wide ranging naturalistic effects simulation including destruction, water, fire, procedural environments and character effects.
Your ability to own your delivery is highly regarded by your previous supervisors. As a professional effects artist and effects technical director, you provide confidence to the production team because you maintain absolute clarity in what is expected of you. You are the artist who seeks to understand and subsequently nail the brief.

Responsibilities

Create and deliver effects; including rigid body dynamics, fluid simulations, cloth simulations and generic particle effects, that match the creative and technical brief.
Tightly adhere to production schedule and deliver to key milestones, presenting your work-in-progress daily.
Work with animation, lighting & compositing as necessary in order to meet FX animation objectives.
Adapt your effects as the brief evolves.
Diagnose and resolve issues with your own Houdini and Python scripts.
Review and QA your work for internal and external delivery ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
Assemble and / or modify complex shaders.
Create consistent lighting and effects render passes for compositing.
Create effects composites in order to demonstrate the effect relative to the plate.
Work in a manner that allows other effects team members to pick up your work if necessary.

We are currently looking for a talented Render TD / Shader Writer to join our CG team.

Reporting directly to the CG Supervisor, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of complex render and shader software systems, used to create high-end visual effects. Your duties will be split between building new systems, maintaining current systems, and supporting artists in executing production tasks. You will collaborate with LookDev, Lighting, FX and Compositing teams to drive the look development of photo realistic CG assets.

Responsibilities

Develop software tools and/or systems under the guidance of departmental project leads.
Come up with creative, efficient rendering solutions for a wide variety of asset types including: hard surface, hair & fur, skin, etc.
Help establish studio rendering conventions for shaders, materials & textures.
Provide regular updates to your direct supervisor, informing them of any issues that may affect progress, offering solutions as required.
Provide rendering training to production users.
Maintain integrity and structure of the pipeline & workflow.
Meet stringent delivery deadlines under production constraints.

Required skills and experience

Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience in high-end feature film visual effects.
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience.
Expertise in one or more production renderers: Arnold, Mantra, Renderman, VRay.
Ability to come up with creative, efficient rendering solutions.
Strong understanding of Physically Plausible Shading models.
Experience writing C++ dso/shadeop.
Experience with Python, or other scripting languages is required.
Artistic and technical skills in Look Development desired.
Texturing and Lighting experience is desirable.

Senior Creature Technical Director

We are currently seeking an established Senior Creature TD who has wide-ranging exposure to creating realistic performances of digital creatures & characters.

Employment period: This is a long-term position with an August/September 2016 start.

Position Overview

The successful applicant will be responsible for creating and maintaining animation rigs for characters, creatures, props and vehicles. You may also be required to implement proprietary tools to aid in the creation of rigs. As a Senior Creature TD you will work closely with Modellers and Animators to develop and refine rigs that meet specific creative and technical VFX requirements.
You will have previously designed, tested and deployed animation rigging toolsets for high end visual effects.

Responsibilities

Prototype, implement and refine fully scripted animation rigs according to production needs.
Troubleshoot and fix rig issues, collect artistic feedback and fine-tune rig behaviour.
Script utilities/tools/plug-ins in various software packages.

You have previously been responsible for creating complex composites that incorporate naturalistic effects simulation, environments and matte painting and native live action elements.

    What if you gammacorrect (.454) your incomming textures? Can you leaf the “Color Management” checkbox in the render settings turned off then?

      If you manually gamma correct colors and textures then no, you do not need to use color management, but can be tedious. Personally I avoid color management because the integration has some flaws especially with the Rasterizer (not that you should ever use the Rasterizer). You should linearize working textures outside the rendering package anyway, this means they can be used in any setting or software without learning a different color workflow.
