Animation Technical Artist

Job Description

Rockstar NYC are looking for an Animation Technical Artist (Motionbuilder specialist) for our current and next-generation console game development. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years using Motionbuilder in the video games industry from a technical standpoint. A strong working knowledge of using Python in Motionbuilder is vital.

Responsibilities

Interact closely with animators and technical artists to maintain and improve our proprietary animation tools.
Collaborate effectively with other team disciplines, predominantly animation and animation code.
Bring innovation and resolution to technical problems and challenges throughout production.
Demonstrate creativity and technical ability within the constraints of console development.
Assist character artists with skinning and rigging of characters, including setups for facial animation.

Qualifications

Experience using Motionbuilder as a technical artist/TD.
Relevant experience using 3d Studio Max in a technical art role is desirable.
Python programming is a prerequisite for the role.
Experience in other scripting and programming languages (Maxscript, C# / C++, etc.) is a big plus.
Industry experience is a requirement, having shipped title(s) on PS3, 360, PC.
Knowledge of facial rigging is a definite plus.
3+ years of applicable professional experience as an animation technical artist.
Relevant games development experience, preferably on a AAA game.

Skills

Strong communication and organizational skills.
Effective time management skills to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
Mentoring other technical artists to help improve their Motionbuilder skills.

The Animation Tools Programmer role will involve developing and maintaining Motionbuilder tools for our advanced character animation systems for large scale games. Responsibilities

Working within the Tools team on all animation related technology, mainly focused on Motionbuilder and other digital content creators.

Technical Animator

Job Description

The Technical Animator supports the production pipeline used by animators/artists, and ensures that the animation team has all of the relevant tools and workflows they need to operate at peak efficiency. Follows direction from animation/art team on an optimal CG look, and ensures that all character assets in the game are being built to withstand performance and memory requirements. Design, create and maintain smooth running asset pipelines, while proactively identifying potential issues before they arise. Develop and refine tools to enable Animation and Character teams with efficient and intuitive workflows – research creative implementation solutions and extend the toolset as required.

Represent team requirements within the studio TD group, providing input to help influence the technological direction of the studio.

Responsibilities

Report to the Technical Artist.
Collaborate with animators to design motion controls.
Support the animation team to address technical issues.
Work with the modelers to help create character models that meet technical and animation needs.
Capable of writing pipeline tools to streamline the character setup process.
Develop new techniques and processes to solve character production challenges.
Work with Python/MaxScript scripts to automate the character animation process.
Work with 3rd party software for viewing and effecting character animations in the game engine.
Assist with dynamics and in-game physics.
Design and implement efficient character/weapon/vehicle rigs for the project.
Tasks include: Technical animation, tool development, skinning and rigging of characters.

Qualifications

5+ years experience in Computer Graphics.
3+ years experience on console game development.
Computer Programming/Scripting experience (e.g. C++, C#, MaxScript, Python, Etc…).
Strong knowledge of Motion Builder 2012+, 3D Max 2012+.
Strong understanding of both Figure and Facial Anatomy.
Experience with facial animation rigs a plus.
Experience with setting up production pipelines while being able to follow guidelines.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Skills

Additional background in Film or TV VFX is a plus.
Experience in UI design for animation tool layout.
