The Systems Developer reports to the Head of IT for our Vancouver and Los Angeles studio locations. This role requires work on a wide range of software for high distributed performance computing and infrastructure services for local and remote studios.Additional responsibilities include technical design, planning, and implementation of new systems, recommending the redesign and configuration of existing systems and system applications, and identifying methods, solutions, and project leadership and management in order to provide a high level of service to the customers of the department.


Design, build, implement, maintain and enhance system infrastructure across multiple hardware and software platforms
Research, design, develop, implement, test and maintain software to enhance distributed, high performance and traditional computing systems infrastructures
Write documentation for new and existing systems software
Provide multi-tier solutions for custom in-house software systems
Work closely with all departments to address organizational needs
Provide organization-wide high level technical support
Respond to incidents and emergencies


A bachelor’s degree in a computer information systems, computer science, engineering, physics or mathematics
4+ years experience in software development, systems engineering or systems administration
2+ years experience in the visual effects industry (preferred)


Substantial experience with and working knowledge of:

Unix/Linux shell scripting; e.g. bash, zsh
version control systems; e.g. git or svn
relational databases; e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL
networking fundamentals
network filesystems
Attention to detail
Good organizational skills

Ability to:

produce high-quality, tested, maintainable code
work independently and in a team
work flexible hours
work effectively under pressure
learn quickly
accurately communicate complex or complicated ideas

Substantial experience with and working knowledge of:

software distribution systems
relational database design; e.g. ER modeling, ORM
document databases
cloud and virtualization technologies
operating system internals
high availability
hardware and software clustering
distributed filesystems
basic statistical analysis
basic data analytics
network and software security
Platform, framework and language agnosticism
A vigorous and natural interest in technology trends


Must be able to lift heavy objects (approx.. 25 lbs)
Must be able to work evenings, at times; longer hours and weekends (rotating on call)
