Environment Artist

Job Description

It’s a real exciting time for us here at Splash Damage, we are about to engage in a very well known and highly popular AAA title with next gen technology and we’re looking to recruit multiple disciplines to fill our ranks.
We are looking for a skilled environment artist with a strong understanding of sculpting and materials to work with our internal team as an Environment Artist. The ideal candidate has prior experience in game development and a solid understanding of Unreal 3 and physically based rendering.
The candidate must be passionate about game development and desire to collaborate closely with environment artists and level designers.
This candidate is expected to work closely with the Art Director and Lead Artists to bring the best out of the environments within our games.

Responsibilities

Work within the Environment Art team to create and maintain in-game environments
Maintain a balance between visual quality and performance requirements for real-time game application
Create new model assets, textures and materials based off concepts and reference
Assist with in-game lighting
Work with the Art Director and Lead Artists to keep artistic style & mood consistent with defined visual style for the game
Participate in R&D of new techniques and implement into production pipeline

Essential Skills and Experience

Skilled in game art asset creation – high-poly 3D hard surface modeling & organic sculpting, low-poly 3D modeling, 2D texture creation and real-time material authoring
In-depth knowledge of 3D modeling packages such as Maya or 3D Studio Max
Strong experience of 2D texturing and material creation software such as Photoshop, Crazybump, Substance etc.
Experience with Unreal Engine 3 or similar game engine
Good knowledge and use of lighting techniques in the video game or VFX industries
At least 3 years of experience in game development
A strong collaborator and team player
Clear verbal and written communication in English

Desirable Skills and Experience

Strong traditional art skills or photography
Good understanding of physically based rendering
In-depth knowledge of light-mapping techniques for pre-baked lighting
Experience working with art outsourcers and outsourcing workflows

VFX Artist / Senior VFX Artist

Job Description

Splash Damage is looking for an ambitious VFX Artist who can help us realise our goal of making world class in-game visual effects. The ideal candidate is someone who exhibits strong technical and artistic qualities, and relishes a good challenge.
We do not see VFX Artists as particle pushers, but instead someone who works on a wide range of game assets which spans the entire spectrum of in-game art from modelling, texture creation, post-process, shader creation, scripting, animation, video editing, UI, physics and fluid simulation and concept art.
Our VFX team works closely with every department from Audio through to Programming and the ideal candidate needs to be a great communicator and team player, someone who is passionate about games and can be relied upon to push quality and performance.

Responsibilities

Create VFX from conception to completion for gameplay features, environmental/atmospheric ambience, and cinematic sequences
Investigate, document and guide improvements to pipelines, processes and tools
Coordinate, support and collaborate with teams across all aspects of development
Maintain vision, quality and stylistic consistency whilst staying within budget, performance and time constraints

Essential Skills and Experience

Minimum of 2 years of VFX experience (unless able to demonstrate exceptional aptitude)
Excellent capacity for analysis, observation, and problem solving
Being able to create believable natural phenomena like fire, explosions, fluid/pyrotechnical behaviour as well as more abstract effects like magical or futuristic powers using a game-editor (Unreal, Unity etc.)
Must have a good grasp of economy to maintain great real-time performance on target systems
In depth knowledge of Max or Maya, as well as Photoshop.
Experience with game editors and game production processes

Preferred Skills and Experience

Previous shipped titles (especially AAA multiplayer)
Experience with related software such as Nuke, After Effects, Houdini, FumeFX etc.
Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, LUA, JavaScript etc.)
Qualifications such as a diploma or degree in relevant discipline
Strong foundation in traditional art/media

We are looking for an experienced artist with outstanding mastery of lighting and composition to work with our internal team as a Senior Lighting Artist. The ideal candidate has prior experience in game development and a deep understanding of Unreal 3 and physically based rendering.

The candidate must be passionate about game development and desire to collaborate and mentor other artists.

This candidate is expected to work closely with the Art Director and Lead Artists to bring the best out of the environments, cinematics and characters within our games. They are expected to help define the vision and direction with lighting and ensure that they follow up and coordinate their work with related teams.

Responsibilities

Work with the Art team to create and maintain all elements of lighting throughout the game
Maintain a balance between visual quality and performance requirements for real-time game application
Work with the design team to ensure our lighting accentuates gameplay
Work with the Art Director to keep artistic style & mood consistent with defined visual style for the game
Participate in R&D of new techniques and implement into production pipeline
Mentor and train artists in the ways of lighting
Make things look awesome

Essential Skills and Experience

Strong knowledge and use of lighting techniques in the video game or VFX industries
Expert understanding of the principles of form, artistic composition & color theory
Strong knowledge of light-mapping techniques for pre-baked lighting
At least 3 years of experience in game development
Strong understanding of physically based rendering
Strong experience with Unreal Engine 3
A strong collaborator and team player
Clear verbal and written communication in English

Desirable Skills and Experience

Experience creating Environment Art
Experience in photo realistic texture creation and shaders
Strong traditional art skills or photography
