The Third Floor, Inc. is seeking Previs Supervisors for the Los Angeles office.

THE THIRD FLOOR, Inc. is the world’s pre-eminent, Emmy Award visualization company with offices in Los Angeles and London as well as on location with productions around the world. For the past 12 years, the studio has helped clients visualize and maximize content by producing computer-animated blueprints, known as “previsualizations”. Recent film and television projects THE THIRD FLOOR, Inc. has worked on include The Martian, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Marvel’s Ant-Man, San Andreas, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mad Max: Fury Road, Maleficent, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Edge of Tomorrow, Guardians of the Galaxy and Game of Thrones Seasons 4 and 5. We continue to push the boundaries of entertainment with content development for exciting cutting-edge projects.
The Previs Supervisor is responsible for the creative direction of previsualization projects. They collaborate with the film’s Director and VFX Supervisor to help visually conceptualize the film. Supervisors act as the key client contact on shows they are assigned to. Supervisors decide on internal assignments and schedules, conducting efficient review of artists’ work and has sole responsibility for internal sign off.

Responsibilities:

Work closely with the client(s) to ensure that their vision is met, constantly improving on their wishes.
Collaborate with the Director, VFX Supervisor and other creative leads on the film to design & deliver effective previs of key sequences.
Take responsibility to meet the pressures and demands of a production schedule, working with the Producers and Production Management team to deliver the previs on time and on budget.
Work closely with the Production Manager to ensure an accurate production schedule is set up and maintained, contribute to bidding stage by assessing work required.
Work out element, technical and R&D requirements.
Daily review of assets and shot work in progress.
Work closely with all departments on pipeline improvements and developments.
Mentor and support the previs artists on their team, motivate and provide effective feedback to artist, train artists and understand how to develop artist abilities, set goals/deadlines.
Continuous self-improvement, uses cross functional knowledge to trouble shoot problems.
Confidence to contribute to the pre-production process as a key creative with a willingness to form a strong bond with the director, and other departments such as: vfx, editorial, production design.
Communications to TTF production on current and foreseen problems that will need to be addressed.

Essential Skills:

Extensive experience in visual effects for film including recent supervision experience both studio based and on location.
Versed in film grammar, composition and editorial decisions.
Extensive experience of Autodesk Maya.
Experience in After Effects.
Experience of working to tight budgets and timelines.
Strong & proven leadership, communication and problem solving skills.
A solid knowledge of Previs/VFX/CG shot production and its iteration process.
Strong creative and technical skills in photo-realistic 3D animation and competency in all other areas of 3D including modelling, texturing, lighting, FX and rendering.
A desire to learn from others and to take on increasingly challenging work.
A vivid imagination.

The Third Floor Los Angeles is looking for a seasoned Graphics Programmer who enjoys a collaborative and creative work environment and is looking to push the boundaries of cutting-edge hardware working in virtual and augmented reality. The Unreal Engine is the primary development focus, but familiarity with other game engines is desired.

Responsibilities:

Build amazing VR games and experiences.
Programming in all relevant languages (C++ / GLSL / HLSL / Cg).
Collaborate with an agile and interdisciplinary team of artists, designers, and programmers to design, prototype,and implement new assets & features.
Work with artists and technical directors to create, implement, optimize, test and debug all the elements required in engine.
Keep up to date on game engine and VR technologies.
Investigate new technologies and evaluate them for TTF’s workflow.
Support multiple game engine projects for a variety of delivery platforms.
Assist with asset integration into game engine, balancing artistic integrity and performance.
Assist with development & maintenance of technical design documentation.
Provide & assist in the generation of accurate development time estimates.
Constantly explore, test, and evaluate new optimization and quality improvement techniques.
Assist in specification, ensure that design and implementation of experience meets run-time and performance budgeting requirements.
Assist with R&D as it relates to real-time productions at TTF.
Actively participate in the QA process to identify and fix bugs.

Required Skills:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
In-depth knowledge of 3D programming (OpenGL or DirectX).
Extensive experience with, and extending, the Unreal Engine.
Minimum 5+ years game industry programming experience.
Extensive experience with C++ programming language and debugging.
Extensive experience with OOD and team software development principles.
Write polished, optimized and documented code.
Solid understanding of real time rendering, game optimization and profiling.
Technical proficiency and understanding of game engine shader creation, texturing and lighting.
Strong understanding of 3D modeling, texturing and animation.
Experience working on published AAA titles.
Solid understanding of algorithms, physics and math.
Able to identify technical and developmental risks / obstacles.
Able to think creatively and resolve technical challenges and limitations.
Able to work within a team as well as self-direct under your own initiative.
Excellent communication skills at all levels, both on a technical and creative basis.
All around knowledge of the game development cycle.
Proven attention to detail and focus on quality.

Desired Skills:

Previous experience or strong desire to be working with VR or AR hardware & SDKs.
Unity, Crytek or other ”under the hood” game engine experience.

The Third Floor is looking for Character / Facial Rigging TDs for the Los Angeles office. The Riggers must demonstrate an understanding of sculpture and animation in order to create user-friendly, intuitive character rigs for animators.

Responsibilities:

Interface with animators to maintain an understanding of their workflow needs.
Ensure that the deformation of skinned geometry maintains appeal of character designs.
Model appealing facial expressions.
Construct rigs with Unreal Engine specifications in mind.
Create, test, and maintain rig-integrated character dynamics systems.
Develop a working knowledge of existing rig building and production tools.
Adhere to established departmental rigging standards.
Collaborate with other Rigging TDs to improve upon existing rigging methods.
Implement changes and complete rigs in accordance with production schedule.
Maintain an open and professional demeanor regarding direction, changes and shifting requirements.

Required Skills:

2+ years professional production experience as a Character Technical Director or Rigger/Technical Animator on film, television, or game projects using Maya.
Reel demonstrating technical mastery of character rigging and dynamics fundamentals as well as aesthetic principles of character design.
Demonstrated ability to optimize own workflow for enhanced productivity.
Broad understanding of human and animal anatomy.
Sculpting, modeling experience a plus.
Facility with Maya Python and/or PyMEL.
Strong desire to provide top-notch, responsive technical services to in-house animation clients.
Excellent time-management skills.
