Job Description
The CFX Lead is a senior Production role reporting to the CG Supervisor and Director. The CFX Lead provides technical and creative guidance in diverse workflows that involve simulations of clothing, fur, hair and other miscellaneous components, as well as the execution of geometric finaling and sculpting operations across the full spectrum of assets.

Contributions to the production include creative and aesthetic direction, technical input on pipeline and tool design and guidance on establishing and maintaining best practices among CFX Artists.

The CFX Lead may also be called upon to do shot work when necessary during visual development or during intensive production periods.

Clear and timely communication skills are essential.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Working with the Asset departments on the creation of garments and other dynamically deforming asset components such as hairstyles and fur elements.
Having a very good visual sense of correct dynamic behaviours, being able to recognize simulation problems and knowing what needs to be done in order to apply appropriate fixes.
Establishing optimal workflows within the CFX team for both dynamic simulation and manual sculpting of any geometric elements in the film, and assessing the work of CFX artists to ensure that the approaches and the results are ideal.
Functioning cooperatively with the Asset and Production Engineering departments ensuring that all asset and pipeline conventions are observed.
Working with the Director and CG Supervisor to ensure that appropriate quality standards are met and maintained according to the demands of the project.
Working with Production Engineering in order to ensure that robust CFX pipeline functionality is properly defined and tested.
Analyzing script breakdowns to identify and report on CFX complexity levels in upcoming productions.
Developing and ensuring the observance of best practices for CFX Artists.
Keeping up-to-date with software features found in Maya (nCloth), Houdini, Yeti, Qualoth, or Marvelous Designer in order to be able to recommend third-party software to be used on a production, achieve aesthetic targets, as well as troubleshoot and identify production issues.
Writing and reviewing user and technical documentation relating to CFX workflows and production practices, as well as technical specifications for pipeline and tool software developers.
Sourcing suitable reference materials for required asset components and dynamic behaviours.
Working to meet defined milestones within a production’s strict time constraints.
Communicating clearly and promptly with the CG Supervisor, Director, colleagues in other departments, and internally with the CFX crew.
Mentoring, providing direction, and preparing new hire orientations for CFX Artists.
Assisting with HR tasks such as recruiting and performance evaluations.
Performing shot work and executing fixes as required during production.

Qualifications:

Significant (6+ years) of CG production experience, and at least two full productions.
Strong knowledge of Maya, hair and fur experience with tools such as XGen, Yeti, or Shave and a Hair Cut, and substantial cloth simulation experience with tools such as nCloth, Qualoth or similar.
Familiarity with Rigging workflow and practices, as well as Modeling techniques.
Extensive experience with dynamic simulations.
Scripting proficiency in Mel and Python.
Proven leadership, communication, scheduling and problem-solving abilities.

FX Supervisor

Job Description
The FX Supervisor, under the guidance of the CG Supervisor and Director, is charged with the responsibility of guiding the FX crew to deliver the desired looks and behaviors of visual effects in a CG feature film via use of available software within the agreed upon pipeline. The FX Supervisor determines the technical approaches needed to achieve these effects, and is expected to task FX artists with their execution based on the array of skillsets present within the team.

The FX Supervisor functions as a principal Liaison between the crew of FX artists and the senior creative partnership of the CG Supervisor and Director. The FX Supervisor reviews and refines production estimates of his artists, provides schedules to the CG supervisor and Production Management, and regularly monitors progress of all work within his department. The FX Supervisor also remains aware of parallel efforts that are underway (such as pipeline development or asset creation) in other teams that are expected to directly impact the FX department’s production progress.

The FX Supervisor is expected to keep crew and workflow efficiency in mind in addition to remaining completely engaged on an aesthetic level with all work that is being performed by the team.

The FX Supervisor is also responsible for helping to design efficient, versatile pipeline workflows in conjunction with the Pipeline Supervisor and developers.

This position requires the observance of short turnaround times. Being able to produce robust prototypes quickly and effectively is critical. The FX Supervisor may also be called upon to do shot work when necessary during visual development or during intensive production periods.

Articulate and timely communication skills are essential.

Working with the CG Supervisor to identify and prioritize the effects in the film as well as communicate to outside departments dependencies that impact the FX department’s progress.
Working with the Pipeline Supervisor to establish functionality specifications for the production infrastructure to allow the successful delivery of assets into and out of the FX department.
Working with the CG Supervisor and Production Management to maintain clear and realistic expectations of deliverables, and to define digital asset and production software needs of the FX crew.
Maintaining an extremely good visual sense of correct dynamic behaviours, being able to recognize technical and/or simulation problems and identifying what needs to be done in order to apply appropriate fixes.
Establishing optimal workflows within the FX team, and assessing the work of FX artists to ensure that the approaches and results are ideal.

Qualifications:

A minimum of eight years of CG FX production experience.
Very strong leadership, organizational and project management skills; must have the experience and influence to lead the FX artists while operating under tight deadlines.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent job experience.
Proven experience as an expert user or supervisor with expertise in one or more commercial applications including: Maya, Houdini, Naiad, RealFlow, Nuke, Fusion, 3Delight/Renderman.
Programming experience in Python (or other scripting language), C++, C, PyQt and MEL.
Proficiency in technical issues surrounding all aspects of Maya and Houdini, in particular the simulation of particles, rigid and soft-bodies, fluids, cloth, and hair.
Experience in writing code that interacts with Maya’s API and Houdini’s HDK is a definite plus, as is familiarity with the AlembicIO, Field3D or OpenVDB data formats
Experience with Nuke, Fusion, Shake or other compositing software.
Experience with Tractor, Deadline, Qube or other render farm management software.
Solid investigative problem solving and debugging abilities.
A proven ability to clearly communicate creative and technical ideas.

Other Desired Skills:

A strong combined technical and creative background with in-depth knowledge of current 2D and 3D computer graphics techniques as they are used in the feature film and media production industries.
A proficiency in the mathematics of geometric constructions, deformations and dynamic behaviours prevalent in contemporary film effects and game design.
A solid aesthetic sense; a consistent, finely tuned creative eye that can recognize, direct and execute outstanding, coherent, well-integrated visual effects.
A professional history of collaboration on projects with teams of varied sizes and disciplines.

Pipeline Supervisor

Job Description
The Pipeline Supervisor is a senior role within the Production Technology team reporting to the CG Supervisor and the Head of Production Technology. The Pipeline Supervisor provides direction and leadership in managing the ongoing development and maintenance of the studio’s pipeline. This requires timely, accurate and effective communication with all departments interfacing with the pipeline.

The Pipeline Supervisor must partner with producers, creative supervisors, departments heads, engineers, and artists to define technology and workflow requirements to meet the needs of productions and overseas’ initiative. As a key technology leader in the studio, the Pipeline Architect is responsible for ensuring that the internal content teams have the best possible tools, pipeline and technical artists to ensure they can deliver high quality and compelling animation on time and on-budget. Articulate and timely communication skills are essential.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintaining an intimate understanding of the technologies deployed throughout the pipeline and the workflow processes in place to facilitate Production deliveries.
Interfacing with all production department Leads to manage technical development priorities and ensure they have the tools necessary for on time delivery of the Production quota.
Managing incremental change to the always-evolving pipeline in order to increase productivity for creative departments with an emphasis on quality control and up time.
Managing pipeline development delivery schedules to satisfy artistic department priorities
Communicating the pipeline development status to department Leads and Executive Management.
Interfacing with the Systems department; Assisting in analyzing the infrastructure requirements necessary to ensure consistent up time of the pipeline in a robust environment; Assisting in the organization of production data in order to ensure consistency, efficiency and ease of use.
Preparing new hire orientation for Technical Directors
Mentoring and providing direction for Technical Directors involved in the development and maintenance of the pipeline.
Developing and ensuring best practices for coding standards, testing efforts and code releases.
Write and reviewing technical specifications, testing strategies, training materials, user and technical documentation relating to pipeline.
Assisting with HR tasks such as recruiting and performance evaluations.
Liaising with the Head of Production Technology and the Head of IT in order to help define and drive studio technology research, assessments, decisions and implementation.

Qualifications:

A minimum of eight years of CG production experience, which include working on at least two previous feature animation pipelines that involved VFX, and ideally on full pipeline development projects that have been executed from the ground up.
Experience in artist and infrastructure tool design, prototyping and implementation using Python (or other scripting language), MEL and C++ in environments whose key tools are Maya, Houdini, Renderman or 3Delight, Yeti (or other fur or hair system), Nuke (preferred) or Fusion, Naiad or RealFlow.
Experience with (or experience developing) production management and asset tracking software such as Shotgun or Tactic
Very strong leadership, organizational and project management skills; must have experience and influence to lead the TDs and give direction on Pipeline development decisions while operating under tight deadlines.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related science or technology degree, or equivalent technology-oriented job experience.
Familiarity with the productions shared across multiple sites, such as a joint collaboration with one or more overseas studios.
Experience with vendor relationships.
