Character Finaling Artist
A Character Finaling Artist’s role is to provide support to a show’s artists, team leads and supervisors as required over the course of production as well as achieve production asset/shot work, when needed and where the asset/shot work appropriately matches his/her skill set.
A Character Finaling Artist will implement and maintain new tools and processes for a particular show or department. As well, during production a Character Finaling Artist will help trouble shoot and resolve technical issues as needed to keep production moving forward.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
To train and learn about ToonBox-related pipeline tools, immediate render processes and upcoming buildout plans and provide support where appropriate.
To implement and utilise production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects primarily in the area of lighting and rendering, which may include scripting as well as the testing of production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects and pipeline growth.
To collaborate with the Director/Lead Layout Artist/Director of Photography to explore and develop the visual story of THE NUT JOB 3D feature film slated for theatrical release, amongst other titles.
To present the visual direction of layout sequences via contributing to sequence production while collaborating within the layout team.
To assist with visual exploration, research, and/or creation of design (character/environments/props or rough models) in Rough Layout as required by the story during visual development/ pre-production.
To transition from Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, Set Dressing, Stereo as required.
To revise, edit and modify layouts/shots as indicated by the director or creative team.
To support colleagues; this may include troubleshooting and/or obtaining appropriate resolution to any technical issues as they arise to keep production moving forward.
To streamline or eliminate unnecessary scenes and filming requirements from the production as well as partner with the Steroscopic Team.
Enhance animation, primarily that of characters, via acting as a means of quality control to ensure from/silhouettes are clean (for example, without intersections/penetrations).
Build FX rigs for both cloth and fur dynamic simulations for a variety of characters.
Achieve shot specific character finishing, custom groom/animation fixes, and fur dynamics, and cloth adjustments.
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design (composition/spatial perception of objects in 3D space) and related revisions which include, but are not limited, to stereoscopy.
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, mood.
To ensure quality control via verifying that all shots follow studio policies and guidelines prior to moving into next stage of production.
Support and work with multiple departments, including Modeling, Animation, Lighting, FX, Compositing.
Work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
Ensure all processes implemented follow studio policies and guidelines.
Work closely with Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, CG/VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.
Organize his/her time, collaborate, and effectively communicate with their supervisors and team members to meet deadlines.
Assist in training and mentoring of crew, as deemed necessary by production.
Create cartoon/realistic/naturalistic results as deemed appropriate.
Problem solve any shot-related issues after animation.
Experience and skills required:
Recognised experience in feature film production.
Excellent working knowledge of animation for both cameras and CG.
Knowledge of 3D animation tools (Maya).
Basis CG modeling skills a must.
An understanding of the processes for look development, attention to detail, and problem solving.
Good working knowledge of stereoscopic production methodologies.
Good communication skills are extremely important to enable you to liaise between different departments.
Must be able to work in a collaborative environment and take direction easily and be willing to participate; as a member of a team as well as to work independently as required.
Proven experience within Layout Department on animated feature productions with a strong interest in Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, and Set Dressing and Stereoscopy.
Character Finaling Artist skills with an emphasis on cinematography and animation and character finaling experience would be a must;
Previous experience as a character TD or cloth TD an advantage.
Python and MEL scripting experience an advantage;
