Previs Supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Pre-Viz Supervisor
Reports to: Director /Producer/Production team
Department: Previs / Rough Layout

Position Description:

The Pre-Viz Supervisor is the creative and technical leader of the Layout department. His number one priority is to create a dynamic cinematic vision for the film that supports the narrative, adheres to production assumptions and executes it in a manner inspiring the crew. They work closely with the Director(s) to translate their vision (as represented by the storyboards) into a 3D environment. The Pre-Viz Supervisor contributes to a dynamic cinematic vision for the film and creatively and technically supports other members of the Art, Layout, Modeling, Rigging, Animation teams. He must provide creative and technical solutions to aesthetic problems in a mentoring way.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Pre-Viz Layout: Creative

· Act as the creative leader of the layout process.
· Responsible for controlling the complexity of the movie.
· Take the vision of the Director(s), and block the existing boards to create a 3D version of the story reel with a unique layout of shots.
· Work closely with the CG Supervisor and Art Director to incorporate other department’s concerns into the layout.
· Provide creative and technical solutions to aesthetic problems.
· Work with the Director(s) and CG Supervisor on the iterations of each shot/sequence.
· During review sessions, discuss shot changes with the Director(s) and Storyboard Artist(s) and offer creative input and technical solution-oriented ideas to enhance continuity and consistency of the sequence. Create solutions to creative problems.
· Define and interpret specific instructions from the Directors and production.
· Prepare detailed notes of Layout requirements using Director’s initial notes.
· If required, communicates with Overseas Layout Department when issues or questions arise, including meetings and conference calls.

Pre-Viz Layout: Technical

· Responsible for being knowledgeable about software used on the production, as it relates to the Layout department.
· Up-to-date technically on all hardware and software used in production, including experience with basic Python/MEL scripting.
· Ensure that Pipeline protocols are followed by the Art, Layout, Modeling, Rigging, Animation department.
· Ensure that the development and integration of toolsets for rough layout.
· Liaise with department heads to solve technical problems.

Pre-Viz Layout: Administrative

· Document cinematic style workflow and pipeline process for production.
· Remain accountable for shot count management through Layout process.
· Accountable for on time, on budget execution and delivery of up to date layouts throughout production.
· Responsible for controlling the complexity of the movie, within the scope of production.
· Responsible for communicating all changes and updates through their APM/Coordinator in a timely fashion.
· Responsible for adhering to the production schedule.
· Work with the CG Supervisor on casting shots/assignments to Layout artists.
· Responsible for improving the performance of artists on the team, both technically and creatively.
· Responsible for participation in the unification and initiatives for the studio within the Layout department.
· Facilitate meetings with Layout artists to keep the crew informed on show changes and requirements.
· Ensure open lines of communication with APM and Production.
· Communicate with Overseas Layout Department when issues or questions arise (if required).
· Attend Layout Reviews, Launches and Approvals with Production.
· Use Director’s feedback to generate additional information for Layout team to execute.

Required Skills and Experience:

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualization, or Computer Animation required or equivalent work experience
· 5-7+ years of experience creating cinematic pre-visualizations for CG animation or feature film productions, with at least 2 years of Lead experience.
· Previous experience in a leadership role on a Feature film or Animated Feature project with a strong interest in Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, and Set Dressing and Stereoscopy.
· Expertise in scene, shot, camera, and character composition is preferred.
· Exposure to modeling, lighting, texturing and animation required.
· Strong knowledge of terminology and techniques used in film, animation and visual effects including knowledge of photography and camera lenses.
· Strong understanding of cinematography a must.
· A strong working knowledge of the principles of cinematic staging, blocking and camera work.
· Demonstrated expertise using Maya is required, with good working knowledge of Unix/Linux.
· Scripting and programming skills a plus.

Modeller – Intermediate

Description

Position: Modeller
Reports to: Lead Modeller / Modelling Supervisor / Production Manager

Position Description:

To create 3D assets, with primary focus on environment/set/prop modelling, during visual development, pre-production, and production.
To achieve models for feature film production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines;
To help troubleshoot modelling issues as they arise over the course of production while partnering with the Lead Modeller, Art Director, Supervisor, and Technical Team to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the most efficient manner while technical specs are adhered to;
To spot, report, and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge with team members and team lead;
To assist other team members within the Assets Department as needs arise;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Modelling Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.).
To work to agreed quota
To learn additional skill sets to further enhance career development via exploring and/or assisting other departments, such as Fur/Rigging/Lighting/Compositing, as deemed necessary for production by CG Supervisor. (NOTE: Full transition to other departments is dependent upon performance and evaluation by team lead.)

Required Skills and Experience:

– Proven experience of working on more complex set pieces/models using commercial applications such as Maya or Renderman
– 1 – 3+ years CG Modelling experience
– Shotgun experience preferred
– Experience with a sculpting application (zBrush/MudBox) a bonus

Environmental Concept Designer

Description

Position: Environment Concept Designer/Visual Development Artist
Reports to: Director

Position Description and Responsibilities:

To explore and present the visual direction for environments/sets and props as a means to provide the roadmap for the storyboard team during visual development and pre-production while meeting the highest of quality, aesthetically and technically;
To assist with visual exploration and/or research of design as required by production or the studio
To partner with Director/Art Director (CG Supervisor and Technical Team, if required) to help ensure aethetic goals are met in the most efficient manner;
To collaborate with the Director/Art Director to explore and develop colour design as required by production or the studio;
To work collaboratively with other departments, such as the Story Team, to support their needs as determined by the Director/Art
Director;
To ensure file management and archiving of art work is maintained throughout the course of production;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design and related revisions;
To assist in the creation of visual direction for characters/environments/props for use by various asset departments within the pipeline
To gather suitable reference material from various sources;
To produce concept art, schematics, layouts, as well as clean orthographics (if required);
To revise work per Director’s/Art Director’s feedback;
Provide creative input where appropriate;
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood ;
To troubleshoot creative and technical issues as they arise as requested by Art Director

Production Manager

Description

Position: Production Manager
Reports to: Producer/Head of Production
Department: Production Management

Position Description:

Manage the day-to-day operation of the production including crew scheduling, production scheduling, and tracking of man weeks. The Production Manager is also responsible for overseeing the Assistant Production Managers, Production Coordinators and Assistants as well as Team Leads to ensure and maintain the proper allocation of departmental resources throughout the production schedule, for any ToonBox project, over the course of the entire production cycle (during visual development, pre-production, and production, post-production).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

SCHEDULING

Macro schedule- work with Producer using budgeted assumptions, breakdown and create a more detailed departmental schedule with the department APMs.
Oversee departments’ output to ensure resources are on target.
Create and analyze production reports per department with the APM and work with Producer to develop a weekly production status report.
Breakdown story reel to plan for new work to be produced. Schedule out work in partnership with Producer and CG Supervisor as necessary.
Support Producer in terms of defining specific start dates for new hires. Partner with Producer (and Recruiting) to ensure start up agendas and packages are prepared for all new hires.
Update and modify master schedule as required throughout production. Communicate changes to all applicable people.
Identify schedule variances and monitor changes incurred from approved production plan; recommend corrective action as necessary.

TRACKING

Oversee the weekly tracking of departments’ quotas along with given departments’ APMs.
Evolve the file management system as necessary, including that of all artwork created by the design department.
Ensure that the file management and/or tracking system is being used properly.
Check all data for accuracy and to ensure the project is on track.
Ensure the APMs are tracking their department’s output and reporting status’ appropriately.

PRODUCTION

May be assigned responsibility for voice recording and casting.
Work with Producers to get clearance feedback and implement it.
Prepare and distribute weekly production reports to all applicable people.
Make recommendations for improvements to production and pipeline systems, particularly with respect to scheduling, and flow of information, milestone realization, and resource management.
Help to achieve and balance creative and operational goals of the project.
Identify production issues and proactively loop back this information to the producer.

Required Skills and Experience:

Project management – proven ability in managing projects from concept to completion.
Able to prioritize appropriately and always meet deadlines.
Excellent teamwork – ability to assemble and motivate teams and work effectively with others.
Strong written & verbal communication – good at following directions.
Organization – demonstrate organizational skills, including a strong attention to detail.
Strong problem solving skills.
Excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

Qualifications:

Experience in traditional 2D and 3D animation production.
Minimum 5 years of animation/industry experience.
Proficient in MS Office suites including Excel and Word.
Proficient in Shotgun
Overseas animation experiences a bonus.

Annual Salary: $75,000 to $100,000 – Based on experience

Senior Previs Artist

Description

Position: Senior Pre-viz Artist
Reports to: Pre-viz Supervisor/Pre-viz Lead/Assistant Production Manager
Department: Rough Layout / Pre-viz

Position Description:

The Pre-viz Artist reports to the Pre-viz Supervisor, the Pre-viz Lead, and the Assistant Production Manager. His/her first priority is to create dynamic, creative and inspiring cinematic expressions for the film that support the narrative, adhere to the Director’s vision (as represented by the story reel) and works within Production assumptions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Work closely with the Director and Pre-viz Supervisor to create cinematic sequences in the 3-D environment that both interpret and enhance the unique vision for the story.
Must be able to work from storyboards and/or create sequences from script treatments.
Able to analyze, trouble-shoot and creatively solve cinematic problems that inevitably arise in the course of production.
Able to pitch and effectively communicate these solutions and ideas to the Director, Pre-viz Supervisor and creative team.
Work with the Director, the Pre-viz/Shot Prep Supervisor and the CG Supervisor to refine sequence and shot iterations until approved.
Adhere to Pipeline protocols for the Pre-viz/Shot prep department, as established by Production
Identify and flag any pipeline or department work-flow problems that may arise.
Adhere to the production schedule for the department.
Attend department meetings with to keep up to date on story reel changes and department
Communicate in a timely fashion with APM and Production for all inter-department issues.
Attend all sequence reviews, launches and approvals with the Director and Maintain detailed and accurate notes.
Provide a clean, legible final file and appropriate notes to the next department (Shot-prep).

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer Science or computer animation or equivalent work
5+ years of experience creating cinematic pre-visualizations or rough layout for CG animation, with multiple feature film experience.
A strong interest in Pre-viz/Layout, storytelling.
Strong knowledge of cinematic language and the fundamentals of image structure, staging, lensing and composition.
Strong knowledge of story structure.
Shotgun knowledge
Some exposure to modeling, lighting, texturing and animation is preferred.
Demonstrated experience working in the Maya environment and solid knowledge of the basic tools of the CG Pre-vis artist.

Annual Salary: $85,000 to $120,000 – Based on experience
