Storyboard Artists

Position Description and Responsibilities:

To collaborate with the Director/Lead Story Artist to explore and develop the visual story of any Toonbox projects
To present the visual direction of story sequences via contributing to sequence/board production
To streamline or eliminate unnecessary scenes and filming requirements from the production
To assist with visual exploration, research, and/or creation of design (character/environments/props) as required by the story during visual development/pre-production
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design and related revisions which include, but are not limited, to stereoscopy
To listen to the Director’s verbal description/launch of sequences and shots and realize character action /pacing/mood/cinematography in visual form
To create new and interesting ideas to capture both the activity and the emotion of the scene
To manage timelines to ensure all sequences are cast, completed and submitted on schedule
To revise, edit and modify sketches as indicated by the Lead Story Artist
To implement various computer programs to enhance the visual presentation of ideas for the scene or for effectively capturing the director’s ideas for shots/sequences
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, mood

Required Skills and Experience

Good understanding of layout, composition, sequential drawing and editing.
Ability to visualise perspective and 3-dimensional space.
Work either independently or as part of a team.
Take direction, and also be prepared to make changes to their work.
Good drawing skills, and must be able to follow an established design style, if required.
Good communication and presentation skills are essential.
Depending on the project, basic computer literacy, and familiarity with relevant storyboard software may be required.
Strong portfolio of work
Beneficial in knowing Storyboard Pro and Photoshop or similar

Modeler

Position Description and Responsibilities:

To create 3D assets, with primary focus shared between character/environment/set/prop modeling, during visual development, pre-production, and production of any Toonbox projects
To achieve models for feature film production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines
To help troubleshoot modeling issues as they arise over the course of production while partnering with the Lead Modeler, Asset Supervisor, Art Director, CG Supervisor, and Technical Team to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the more efficient manner while technical specs are adhered to
To spot, report and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge with team members and team lead
To assist other team members within the Asset Department as needs arise
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Modeling Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.)
To assist other departments, such as Rigging/Lighting/Compositing, as deemed necessary for production by CG Supervisor and Asset Supervisor

Required Skills and Experience

Proven experience of working on more complex set pieces/models using commercial application such as Maya, Mudbox, or Zbrush
3+ years of Modeling experience
Experience with a sculpting application (zBrush/MudBox) a bonus

Editor

Position Description and Responsibilities:

While collaborating closely with the Director and Producer and Lead Editor, the Editor helps to build the story reel through assembling the story board panels and voice track. The Editor plays an integral role in helping to shape the storytelling as it pertains to animation timing, pacing, staging and continuity and as the project evolves from storyboard panels through final picture. The Editor is also responsible for setting up and managing the technical file structure and workflow within editorial. This role also includes managing and training more junior editors.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Story telling skills and a deep understanding of the animation process in order to best guide and support shot/sequence translation to creative and optimal entertainment
Extensive understanding of the needs of the Story, Previsualization, Animation, FX, Lighting and Compositing departments
Following the Director’s guidance, builds the temporary sound track by using stock sound effects and adding in the music track
Oversees and/or implements in latest versions of shots and prepares for dailies sessions. Assembles the reel for screenings as necessary
Uploads and maintains latest cut of sequences for reference and/or review by Artists, Department Supervisors, Director and Producer
Motivates and mentors the editorial team to consistently strive towards excellence
Collaborates with the production management team to prioritize tasks pending production and post-production schedule
Responsible for managing the workflow within the department and fulfilling all production requirements
Creatively plus material in order to achieve optimal storytelling goals
Oversees all film editing and post production requirements for editorial per the project’s schedule
Sets and adheres to digital file management protocols
Supports and integrates the values of ToonBox that being a commitment to innovation, creativity, professionalism and inspiration
Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, staff members and clients
Additional duties as requested

Required Skills and Experience:

Feature Film Production

Degree and/or diploma in film school or equivalent experience preferred
5-7+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline
Worked on at least 1-2 high-end, feature quality productions. Editor experience preferred
Ability to think like a film makers and supplement the creative vision for the project through editing.
Expert knowledge in using AVID is required
Prior experience using Final Cut, After Effects, Photoshop, Assimilate Scratch and/or AVID DS is an asset
Must be proficient with Windows 7 and Macintosh OSX
Colour knowledge and the ability to read a scope for colour is an asset
In-depth knowledge with production tracking system
Vigilant in ensuring all shot changes are efficiently communicated
Experience editing stereoscopic footage is preferred
Ability to liaise with production staff, artists, the editorial team and clearly communicate production and post-production process, plans and set clear expectations
Practices attentive and active listening. Shares information, methodologies and ideas with others

Pre-Vis Artists

Reports to: Pre-Vis Lead/Pre-Vis Supervisor/Assistant Production Manager

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The Previs Artist reports to the Previs Lead/Previs Supervisor/Assistant Production Manager. His/her number one priority is to create a dynamic cinematic vision for the film that supports the narrative, adheres to production assumptions and executes it in a manner inspiring the crew. They work closely with the Director(s) to translate their vision (as represented by the storyboards) into a 3D environment. He/she must provide creative solutions to aesthetic problems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Follow Director(s) creative direction in the layout process.
Adhere to the complexity of the movie.
Take the vision of the Director(s), and block the existing boards to create a 3D version of the story reel with a unique layout of shots.
Work with the Director(s) and CG Supervisor on the iterations of each shot/sequence.
Define and interpret specific instructions from the Director(s) and production.
Responsible for being knowledgeable about software used on the production, as it relates to the Rough Layout department.
Adhere to Pipeline protocols for the Layout department, as governed by Production Engineering.
Remain accountable for assigned shot count management through Layout process.
Responsible for adhering to the complexity of the movie, within the scope of production.
Responsible for adhering to the production schedule.
Responsible for participation in the unification and initiatives for the studio within the RLO department.
Attend meetings with RLO artists to keep the crew informed on show changes and requirements.
Communicate in a timely fashion with APM and Production for all inter-department concerns.
Attend Layout Reviews, Launches and Approvals with Production.

Required Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualization, or Computer Animation required or equivalent work experience
1-3+ years of experience creating cinematic pre-visualizations or rough layout for CG animation.
A strong interest in Rough Layout, Set Dressing and Stereoscopy.
Knowledge in scene, shot, camera, and character composition is preferred.
Exposure to modeling, lighting, texturing and animation is preferred.
A good working knowledge of the principles of cinematic staging, blocking and camera work.
Demonstrated experience using Maya is required, with good working knowledge of Unix/Linux.

To present the visual direction of colour and/or texture for characters, environments/sets, and props as a means to provide the roadmap for the surfacing and lighting/compositing teams during visual development, pre-production, and production while meeting the highest of quality, aesthetically and technically
To listen to the Director/Art Director’s verbal description/launch of sequences and shots and create interesting visual/colour ideas to capture both the activity and the emotion of the scene(s)
To partner with Art Director (CG Supervisor and Technical Team, if required) to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the most efficient manner
To revise, edit and modify work (such as colour palette(s) and/or the colour script) as indicated by the Art Director
To work collaboratively with other departments to support their needs as determined by the Art Director or Creative Director or Production Designer
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design and related revisions
To research and collate suitable reference material from various sources for asset and shot production
To produce concept art, schematics, layouts, matte paintings as deemed necessary
To provide creative input where appropriate
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood via organizing and managing timelines to ensure colour design is cast, completed and submitted on time
To ensure file management and archiving of art work is maintained throughout the course of production
To troubleshoot creative and technical issues as they arise as requested by Art Director

Required Skills and Experience:

A strong understanding of design and the issues inherent in creating characters, sets, props, vehicles, lighting setups, and render styles for a 3D CGI feature length production, worthy of a theatrical release
Must have strong 3-D and 2-D character modeling, and creature design experience
Must have worked on at least 2-3 titles
Must have extensive experience in multimedia content – film and television work an asset
Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills
Proven abilities in conceptualizing, organizing, and managing projects from concept to completion

To help establish and/or create the look and feel of characters, props and environments during visual development, pre-production, and production with direction from the Lead Texture Artist, CG Supervisor, Art Director;
To achieve texture files for production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines;
To partner with Lead Texture Artist and Surfacing team (CG Supervisor and Technical Team, if required) to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the most efficient manner;
To revise, edit and modify work as indicated by the Lead Texture Artist and/or Art Director;
To work collaboratively with other departments to support their needs as determined by the Team Lead, Art Director/CG Supervisor;
To ensure that surfacing files, per aesthetic requirements and technical specs, are complete and ready for lighting;
To ensure file management and archiving of art work is maintained throughout the course of production;
To spot, flag, and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge with team members;
To assist troubleshooting initiatives on creative and technical issues as they arise;
To assist with character grooms/fur needs as required;
To provide creative input where appropriate;
To work collaboratively with other departments such as Technology, VFX, Lighting/Composite;
To work in other asset/shot departments such as Modeling, Stereo, Lighting/Compositing, and assist with studio milestones and targets as considered appropriate via skill set and deemed necessary by production;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Surfacing Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.).
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood via organizing and self-managing timelines to ensure texture/surface assignments are completed and submitted on time.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 5 years of high-end production experience; feature film experience an asset
Strong painting skills and artistic eye for detail
Detail oriented and the ability to understand the complexity of a 3D pipeline
Familiarity with Renderman compliant rendering engines would be an asset
Familiarity with polygonal model texturing using image maps
Strong uving skills is a must
Familiarity with construction of render man compliant shaders and utilities
Experience with hair systems (yeti) would be an asset
Ability to manipulate complex shaders would be an asset
Strong Photoshop and 3D painting knowledge
Experience with mudbox or zBrush
Some experience with Mel /python scripting would be an asset
Ability to take initiative and solve problems independently as well as within a team environment
Track record as a team player
