Production Manager

Description

Position: Production Manager
Reports to: Producer/Head of Production
Department: Production Management

Position Description:

Manage the day-to-day operation of the production including crew scheduling, production scheduling, tracking and of man weeks. The Production Manager is also responsible for overseeing the Assistant Production Managers, Production Coordinators and Assistants as well as Team Leads to ensure and maintain the proper allocation of departmental resources throughout the production schedule, for any ToonBox project, over the course of the entire production cycle (during visual development, pre-production, and production, post-production).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

SCHEDULING

Macro schedule- work with Producer using budgeted assumptions, breakdown and create a more detailed departmental schedule with the department APMs.
Oversee departments’ output to ensure resources are on target.
Create and analyze production reports per department with the APM and work with Producer to develop a weekly production status report.
Breakdown story reel to plan for new work to be produced. Schedule out work in partnership with Producer and CG Supervisor as necessary.
Support Producer in terms of defining specific start dates for new hires. Partner with Producer (and Recruiting) to ensure start up agendas and packages are prepared for all new hires.
Update and modify master schedule as required throughout production. Communicate changes to all applicable people.
Identify schedule variances and monitor changes incurred from approved production plan; recommend corrective action as necessary.

TRACKING

Oversee the weekly tracking of departments’ quotas along with given departments’ APMs.
Evolve the file management system as necessary, including that of all artwork created by the design department.
Ensure that the file management and/or tracking system is being used properly.
Check all data for accuracy and to ensure the project is on track.
Ensure the APMs are tracking their department’s output and reporting status’ appropriately.

PRODUCTION

May be assigned responsibility for voice recording and casting.
Work with Producers to get clearance feedback and implement it.
Prepare and distribute weekly production reports to all applicable people.
Make recommendations for improvements to production and pipeline systems, particularly with respect to scheduling, and flow of information, milestone realization, and resource management.
Help to achieve and balance creative and operational goals of the project.
Identify production issues and proactively loopback this information to the producer.

Required Skills and Experience:

Project management – proven ability in managing projects from concept to completion.
Able to prioritize appropriately and always meet deadlines.
Excellent teamwork – ability to assemble and motivate teams and work effectively with others.
Strong written & verbal communication – good at following directions.
Organization – demonstrate organizational skills, including a strong attention to detail.
Strong problem solving skills.
Excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

Qualifications:

Experience in traditional 2D and 3D animation production.
Minimum 7 years of animation/industry experience.
Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in Production Management.
Proficient in MS office suites including Excel and Word.
Proficient in Shotgun
Overseas animation experiences a bonus.

Salary Range: $75,000 to $100,000 – Based on number of years’ experience at features level.

Assistant Production Manager

Description

Position: Assistant Production Manager
Reports to: Production Manager/Producer

Position Description:

Also responsible for ensuring the projected parameters for production goals, quotas and schedule are met and/or reset as required (if applicable). The Assistant Production Manager may also manage the Production Coordinators and Team Leads to maintain the proper amount of resources throughout the production’s various departments during visual development and pre-production.

Evolve the file management system as necessary, including that of all artwork created by the design department.
Ensure that the file management and/or tracking system is being used properly. Check all data for accuracy and to ensure the project is on track.
Ensure artists are tracking their output and addressing their notes correctly.

PRODUCTION

May be assigned responsibility for voice recording and casting.
Work with Producers/Production Manager to get clearance feedback and implement it.
Prepare and distribute weekly production reports to all applicable people.
Provide Line Producer/Producer/Production Manager with activity reports on a weekly basis.
Make recommendations for improvements to production and pipeline systems, particularly with-respect-to scheduling, flow of information, milestone realization, and resource management.
Help to achieve and balance creative and operational goals of the project.
Identify production issues and proactively loopback this information to production.
Coordinate screen credits for the production’s final credit cards and main credit roll.

SUPERVISION/COMMUNICATION

Understand and message company core values and encourage and inspire creativity in departments.
Inspire and motivate team members to perform their best; recognize team members by celebrating success.
Creatively solve problems, eliminate roadblocks and focus on issues at hand.
Communicate any scheduling and/or quota issues to the Line Producer/Producer/Production Manager; proactively encourage open communication between the team and other departments.
Provide a forum, guidance, and direction for crew members who communicate production / work related issues, promoting an open door policy between, staff, departments and Production Management personnel.

OTHER

Liaise with Overseas Manager to ensure Input/Output requirements are delivered between studios.
Liaise with Facilities Coordinator to ensure adequate resources (i.e. furnishings, lighting, and stationery supplies/items) for the production.
If requested, work with the Line Producer, and Production Accountant, review and code production related purchase orders, invoices, and expenses.
Partner with the Production Accountant to monitor production staff attendance and approve production staff requests for time off (as applicable).
Approve weekly timesheets and ensure they are delivered to the Payroll Manager on time.
Perform other various duties as assigned by the Line Producer/Producer, including note-taking and distribution of notes.

Animators

Description

Position: Senior/Lead Animator

Reports to: Animation Director/Animation Supervisor

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The Senior / Lead Animator is responsible for overseeing animation efforts related to the casting and blocking of shots, animation reviews/dailies and the delivery of approved and/or revised shots on time to meet weekly quota expectations for a given team(s) of animators, with varying levels of experience.
The Senior / Lead Animator is also expected to partner and collaborate with the Animation Director, CG Supervisor, and other department leads to ensure that assets, staging, camera work and character intent is fully understood prior to the onset of animation to ensure successful execution of animation by his/her team.
The Senior / Lead Animator is responsible for partnering with the Animation Director in animation launches (which may include translating the storyboards and/or director’s launch of a sequence/shot from layout into animation) and reviews of character performances while overseeing his/her animation team to ensure that the motivation and acting adheres to the filmic language and goals established for the project as well as maintains a consistent style and coherent level of continuity – both visually and technically – throughout the duration of the production. He or she produces work (character animation) in a fast paced, CG environment using Maya and a suite of proprietary software for THE NUT JOB feature film, amongst other productions/titles as required by the studio.
All Directors, Supervisors, Leads and Artists, pending skill set, may be required to assist other asset/shot departments such as modeling, character finaling, fur finaling, lighting/composite with hands-on shot work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

To collaborate with the Director/Director of Photography/Animation Director/Lead Artists to explore and develop the visual storytelling, primarily that of acting, of THE NUT JOB 3D feature film slated for theatrical release, amongst other titles.
To listen to the director’s verbal description/launch of sequences and shots and realise character action /pacing/mood/cinematography in visual form.
To lead and proactively provide support to the animation team (inclusive of other animation leads) which includes troubleshooting and/or obtaining appropriate resolution to any aesthetic or technical issues as they arise to keep production moving forward.
To create new and interesting ideas to capture both the activity and the emotional intent of the scene.
To maintain a style and deliver quota that is keeping with the look of the show / budget
To present and lead the visual direction of animated sequences via contributing to sequence production while concurrently overseeing a team of animators.
To assist with recruitment of animation talent as deemed necessary.
To organize and manage timelines to ensure all sequences/shots are cast, completed and submitted on schedule.
To revise, edit and modify animation/shots as indicated by the director or creative team.
To implement various computer programs to enhance the visual presentation of ideas for the scene or for effectively capturing the director’s ideas for shots/sequences.
To assist with visual exploration, research, and/or creation of design (character/environments/props) as may be required to further foster the creative collaboration at the studio;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design and related revisions which include, but are not limited, to stereoscopy.
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, acting/mood.
To assist in training and mentoring of Entry Level artists as required.
To familiarise and test production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects and pipeline growth.
To ensure quality control via verifying that all shots follow studio policies and guidelines prior to moving into next stage of production.
To maintain a diplomatic, positive attitude that fosters professional collaboration within the animation department as well as across the various disciplines.
To work and collaborate with Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, CG/VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelors degree in Animation, Film, Art, relevant field or equivalent experience desired;
3 – 5 years of experience at features level animation
Good knowledge of Shotgun
A strong working knowledge of 2D and 3D animation principles for both cameras and CG characters;
A strong working knowledge of the principles of cinematic staging, blocking and camera work;
A good working knowledge of Maya and Unix/Linux;
Good working knowledge of stereoscopic production methodologies;
Must be able to work in a collaborative environment and take direction easily and be willing to participate; as a member of a team as well as to work independently as required;
Proven leadership skills within an Animation Department on animated feature productions.

Render Wranglers

Position: Render Technical Support/Render Wrangler

Description:

The candidate will be part of a team providing providing 24×7 support of the studio’s rendering efforts in completing our current production, a feature length film, as well as future productions. The primary responsibilities will be monitoring the render farm and ensuring high throughput. This will involve diagnosing and resolving rendering errors, managing priorities and pro-actively resolving issues.

Qualifications:

-ability to take direction and work with minimal supervision
-good working knowledge of linux
-desire to pursue a career in the computer animation industry.

Familiarity with the following is a plus:

-Maya, Nuke, 3Delight/renderman/other renderers
-Qube/Deadline/Alfred/Tractor/other render farm management software
-python/bash/tcsh/other scripting languages
-computer animation production pipelines

Annual Salary: $35,000 to $45,000 – Based on experience
