Crowd FX TD/Artists

Description:

The Crowd FX TD/Artist collaborates in the design, development, and implementation of crowd simulation systems and techniques, and uses those systems and techniques to create crowd simulations in shots.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with various departments (Layout, Animation, VFX) to design, develop and implement techniques and systems that simulate crowds and make them easy to propagate across multiple shots.
Integrate these techniques and systems into the existing production pipeline.
Collaborate with crowd animators to populate shots with crowds according to production needs.
Troubleshoot technical issues as they arise.
Other VFX-related work as requested and appropriate.

Qualifications:

Minimum two years experience as an FX or Crowd TD.
Strong knowledge of Maya and/or Houdini.
Good knowledge of vector math and physics is a plus.
Tool building and scripting experience in MEL, Python, Hscript, VEX or equivalent.
Good artistic skills and an eye for natural motion in humans and animals.
Experience in rigging, character FX, and animation are pluses.
Experience with industry standard crowd simulation software such as Massive, Golaem, or Miarmy is a plus.
Solid understanding of the entire animation production process from layout to compositing is a plus.
Able to take direction and adapt to change.
Linux experience preferred.

Description

Under the guidance of Supervisor or Leads, on a CG animated film, the Animator creates animation that supports the overall creative vision for the story.
To tell a story with meaning through movement

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Render Wranglers

Description

Position Description:

Render Wranglers (RW’s) are responsible for providing 24×7 support of the studio’s rendering efforts. RWs monitor and load balance the render farm, assist with crashed and erred jobs, and participate in the day-to-day management of render farm hosts. Provide rendering support for all departments and divisions, including: Previz, Animation, Lighting and VFX.
RWs can also assist monitoring data transfers across various file system hierarchies and initiate data moves to balance disk utilization. Other responsibilities include answering the Render Desk hotline, escalating urgent studio support issues after hours and responding to all Support tickets assigned to the department.

Responsibilities:

Render Farm Management:

• Detect and troubleshoot failed jobs
• Follow-up crashed jobs and jobs killed because they were hung
• Monitor, diagnose and resolve/escalate malfunctioning farm hosts
• Keep the render farm running at maximum capacity
• Monitor file systems for space availability
• Monitor render farm I/O utilization
• Request changes in storage volume sizes as needed
• Identify and report trends and potential problems
• Monitor render blade local disk caches and clear caches
• where necessary
• Monitor software license utilization on render farm

Render Queue Management:

• Monitor the XRender render queue
• Monitor the XRender Dispatcher operation
• Update and maintain the XRender job priorities according to Production
• Assist artists with (python) job submissions and job errors
• Respond to all render-related Support Request Tickets
• Work with production to forecast render resource needs

Render Pipeline Management:

• Update shot directories, libraries and servers
• Run Linux and Perl scripts to convert proprietary script files into images, movie and video files
• Render, inspect and fix frames for multiple concurrent productions
• Provide render time estimates to producers, directors and animators for dailies

Studio Support:

• Monitor studio infrastructure servers and escalate problems
• Answer and escalate Studio Help Desk calls after hours and on weekends
• After hours and weekend render farm support

Qualifications:

• Ability to react and respond quickly to the needs of Production
• Proven pro-active team player

Description

Position Description:

To collaborate within a team environment focussing on the lighting and compositing of shots during visual development, pre-production, and production while meeting the highest of quality, aesthetically and technically, on the studio’s CG Productions;
To light and composite shots for feature film production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines;
To identify potential lighting issues with regard towards scheduled deadlines;
To help troubleshoot and debug lighting/compositing issues as they arise over the course of visual development, pre-production, or production to ensure shot quota is met;
To ensure shots meet established render requirements;
To follow file management specifications provided;
To partner with Art Director, CG Supervisor, Lead Lighter/Compositor, and Technical Team to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the most efficient manner;
To spot, report, and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge or solutions with team members;
To assist other team members within the Lighting/Composite Department as needs arise;
To work collaboratively with other departments such as Technology, Texturing, VFX;
To work in other asset/shot departments and assist with studio milestones and targets as considered appropriate via skill set and deemed necessary by production;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Lighting and Compositing Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.).

Required Skills and Experience:

Advanced knowledge of Maya, and Compositing (Nuke preferred), Renderman experience preferred
6+ years’ experience as a Lighting Artist
CG Feature film experience a must
Ability to communicate creative and technical ideas
A team player and leader, with a track record of multi-tasking and prioritize shot requirement to meet schedule
The Lighting/Compositing Artist must have a complete working knowledge of the lighting process in conjunction with the compositing process.

*DEPARTMENT NOTE: Once a shot has been lit, the lighting artist is required to organise the shot into various layers for render. The rendered layers must then be composited by the same artist to create the final scene.

Character Finaling Artist

Description

Position Description:

A Character Finaling Artist’s role is to provide support to a show’s artists, team leads and supervisors as required over the course of production as well as achieve production asset/shot work, when needed and where the asset/shot work appropriately matches his/her skill set.
A Character Finaling Artist will implement and maintain new tools and processes for a particular show or department. As well, during production a Character Finaling Artist will help trouble shoot and resolve technical issues as needed to keep production moving forward.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

To train and learn about ToonBox-related pipeline tools, immediate render processes and upcoming buildout plans and provide support where appropriate.
To implement and utilise production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects primarily in the area of lighting and rendering, which may include scripting as well as the testing of production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects and pipeline growth.
To collaborate with the Director/Lead Layout Artist/Director of Photography to explore and develop the visual story of THE NUT JOB 3D feature film slated for theatrical release, amongst other titles.
To present the visual direction of layout sequences via contributing to sequence production while collaborating within the layout team.
To assist with visual exploration, research, and/or creation of design (character/environments/props or rough models) in Rough Layout as required by the story during visual development/ pre-production.
To transition from Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, Set Dressing, Stereo as required.
To revise, edit and modify layouts/shots as indicated by the director or creative team.
To support colleagues; this may include troubleshooting and/or obtaining appropriate resolution to any technical issues as they arise to keep production moving forward.
To streamline or eliminate unnecessary scenes and filming requirements from the production as well as partner with the Steroscopic Team.
Enhance animation, primarily that of characters, via acting as a means of quality control to ensure from/silhouettes are clean (for example, without intersections/penetrations).
Build FX rigs for both cloth and fur dynamic simulations for a variety of characters.
Achieve shot specific character finishing, custom groom/animation fixes, and fur dynamics, and cloth adjustments.
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design (composition/spatial perception of objects in 3D space) and related revisions which include, but are not limited, to stereoscopy.
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, mood.
To ensure quality control via verifying that all shots follow studio policies and guidelines prior to moving into next stage of production.
Support and work with multiple departments, including Modeling, Animation, Lighting, FX, Compositing.
Work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
Ensure all processes implemented follow studio policies and guidelines.
Work closely with Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, CG/VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.
Organize his/her time, collaborate, and effectively communicate with their supervisors and team members to meet deadlines.
Assist in training and mentoring of crew, as deemed necessary by production.
Create cartoon/realistic/naturalistic results as deemed appropriate.
Problem solve any shot-related issues after animation.

Experience and skills required:

Recognised experience in feature film production.
Excellent working knowledge of animation for both cameras and CG.
Knowledge of 3D animation tools (Maya).
Basis CG modeling skills a must.
An understanding of the processes for look development, attention to detail, and problem solving.
Good working knowledge of stereoscopic production methodologies.
Good communication skills are extremely important to enable you to liaise between different departments.
Must be able to work in a collaborative environment and take direction easily and be willing to participate; as a member of a team as well as to work independently as required.
Proven experience within Layout Department on animated feature productions with a strong interest in Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, and Set Dressing and Stereoscopy.
Character Finaling Artist skills with an emphasis on cinematography and animation and character finaling experience would be a must;
Previous experience as a character TD or cloth TD an advantage.
Python and MEL scripting experience an advantage;

Surfacing/Texturing Artists

Description

Position Description:

To help establish and/or create the look and feel of characters, props and environments during visual development, pre-production, and production with direction from the Lead Texture Artist, CG Supervisor, Art Director;
To achieve texture files for feature film production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines;
To partner with Lead Texture Artist and Surfacing team (CG Supervisor and Technical Team, if required) to help ensure aethetic goals are met in the most efficient manner;
To revise, edit and modify work as indicated by the Lead Texture Artist and/or Art Director;
To work collaboratively with other departments to support their needs as determined by the Team Lead, Art Director/CG Supervisor;
To ensure that surfacing files, per aesthetic requirements and technical specs, are complete and ready for lighting;
To ensure file management and archiving of art work is maintained throughout the course of production;
To spot, flag, and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge with team members;
To assist troubleshooting initiatives on creative and technical issues as they arise;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Surfacing Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.) ;
To assist with character grooms/fur needs as required;
To provide creative input where appropriate;
To work collaboratively with other departments such as Technology, VFX, Lighting/Composite;
To work in other asset/shot departments such as Modeling, Stereo, Lighting/Compositing, and assist with studio

milestones and targets as considered appropriate via skill set and deemed necessary by production;

To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Surfacing Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.) .
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood via organising and self-managing timelines to ensure texture/surface assigments are completed and submitted on time.

Required Skills and Experience:

Minimum 5 years of high-end production experience; feature film experience an asset
Strong painting skills and artistic eye for detail
Detail oriented and the ability to understand the complexity of a 3D pipeline
Familiarity with Renderman would be an asset
Familiarity with Polygonal texturing using image maps
Strong uv-ing skills is a must
Familiarity with construction of shaders and utilities
Experience with hair systems would be an asset
Ability to debug complex shader networks would be an asset
Strong photoshop and 3D painting knowledge
Experience with mudbox or zbrush
Some experience with mel /python scripting would be an asset
Ability to take initiative and solve problems independently as well as within a team environment

The Effects Artist creates (and may support) a variety of visual effects that support the story and visual style of a computer-generated feature.
