Position: Surfacing/Texture Artist
Reports to: Lead Surfacing/Texture Artist

Description and Responsibilities:

To help establish and/or create the look and feel of characters, props and environments during visual development, pre-production, and production with direction from the Lead Texture Artist, CG Supervisor, Art Director;
To achieve texture files for production as well as other projects in development per established guidelines and timelines;
To partner with Lead Texture Artist and Surfacing team (CG Supervisor and Technical Team, if required) to help ensure aesthetic goals are met in the most efficient manner;
To revise, edit and modify work as indicated by the Lead Texture Artist and/or Art Director;
To work collaboratively with other departments to support their needs as determined by the Team Lead, Art Director/CG Supervisor;
To ensure that surfacing files, per aesthetic requirements and technical specs, are complete and ready for lighting;
To ensure file management and archiving of art work is maintained throughout the course of production;
To spot, flag, and communicate creative and technical issues as they arise via sharing knowledge with team members;
To assist troubleshooting initiatives on creative and technical issues as they arise;
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to the Surfacing Department (schedule, complexity of setups, etc.);
To assist with character grooms/fur needs as required;

To work in other asset/shot departments such as Modeling, Stereo, Lighting/Compositing, and assist with studio milestones and targets as considered appropriate via skill set and deemed necessary by production;

To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood via organizing and self-managing timelines to ensure texture/surface assignments are completed and submitted on time.

Required Skills and Experience:

3-5 years of high-end production experience; feature film experience an asset
Strong painting skills and artistic eye for detail
Detail oriented and the ability to understand the complexity of a 3D pipeline
Familiarity with Renderman compliant rendering engines would be an asset
Familiarity with polygonal model texturing using image maps
Strong uving skills is a must
Familiarity with construction of render man compliant shaders and utilities
Experience with hair systems (yeti) would be an asset
Ability to manipulate complex shaders would be an asset
Strong Photoshop and 3D painting knowledge
Experience with mudbox or zBrush
Some experience with Mel /python scripting would be an asset

Production Assistant

Description

Position Description:

Assist the management of the day-to-day operation of the production including crew scheduling, production scheduling, tracking and of man weeks. Production Assistant is also responsible for overseeing Team Leads to ensure and maintain the proper allocation of departmental resources throughout the production schedule, for any ToonBox project, over the course of the entire production cycle (during visual development, pre-production, and production, post-production).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

SCHEDULING

Macro schedule- work with Production Manager using budgeted assumptions, breakdown and create a more detailed departmental schedule with the department.
Oversee departments’ output to ensure resources are on target.
Create and analyze production reports per department and work with Production Manager to develop a weekly production status report.
Breakdown story reel to plan for new work to be produced. Schedule out work in partnership with Producer and CG Supervisor as necessary.
Support Production Manager in terms of defining specific start dates for new hires. Partner with Production Manager (and Recruiting) to ensure start up agendas and packages are prepared for all new hires.
Update and modify master schedule as required throughout production. Communicate changes to all applicable people.
Identify schedule variances and monitor changes incurred from approved production plan; recommend corrective action as necessary.

TRACKING

Oversee the weekly tracking of departments’ quotas along with given departments
Evolve the file management system as necessary, including that of all artwork created by the design department.
Ensure that the file management and/or tracking system is being used properly.
Check all data for accuracy and to ensure the project is on track.

PRODUCTION

May be assigned responsibility for voice recording and casting.
Work with Production Manager to get clearance feedback and implement it.
Prepare and distribute weekly production reports to all applicable people.
Make recommendations for improvements to production and pipeline systems, particularly with respect to scheduling, and flow of information, milestone realization, and resource management.
Help to achieve and balance creative and operational goals of the project.
Identify production issues and proactively loopback this information to the producer.

POSITION: Character Finaling Artist

DESCRIPTION

The Character Finaling Artist applies a number of techniques—including but not limited to sculpting, grooming, and simulations of cloth and hair—to clean up and enhance character animation on a computer-generated feature.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborate in the design, development and implementation of techniques and systems that simulate cloth and hair, and integrate them into the production pipeline.
Create permanent pose space deformers that allow animation to achieve specific target shapes.
Fix undesirable shapes and artifacts in shots coming out of animation.
Simulate cloth animation in shots.
Groom and simulate hair/fur animation in shots.
Troubleshoot technical issues as they arise.

REQUIREMENTS

5+ years or more experience in character finaling.
Strong knowledge of Maya is essential.
Good artistic skills and an eye for natural motion in humans and animals.
Knowledge of ncloth, nhair, and yeti strongly preferred.
Experience creating and using pose space deformers.
Experience in rigging, modeling, and animation are pluses.
A good generalist. Solid understanding of and experience with the entire animation production process from layout to compositing is a plus.
Able to take direction and adapt to change.
Linux experience preferred.

Render Wranglers

Description

Position Description:

Render Wranglers (RW’s) are responsible for providing 24×7 support of the studio’s rendering efforts. RWs monitor and load balance the render farm, assist with crashed and erred jobs, and participate in the day-to-day management of render farm hosts. Provide rendering support for all departments and divisions, including: Previz, Animation, Lighting and VFX.
RWs can also assist monitoring data transfers across various file system hierarchies and initiate data moves to balance disk utilization. Other responsibilities include answering the Render Desk hotline, escalating urgent studio support issues after hours and responding to all Support tickets assigned to the department.

Responsibilities:

Render Farm Management:

• Detect and troubleshoot failed jobs
• Follow-up crashed jobs and jobs killed because they were hung
• Monitor, diagnose and resolve/escalate malfunctioning farm hosts
• Keep the render farm running at maximum capacity
• Monitor file systems for space availability
• Monitor render farm I/O utilization
• Request changes in storage volume sizes as needed
• Identify and report trends and potential problems
• Monitor render blade local disk caches and clear caches
• where necessary
• Monitor software license utilization on render farm

Render Queue Management:

• Monitor the XRender render queue
• Monitor the XRender Dispatcher operation

• Work with production to forecast render resource needs

Render Pipeline Management:

• Update shot directories, libraries and servers
• Run Linux and Perl scripts to convert proprietary script files into images, movie and video files
• Render, inspect and fix frames for multiple concurrent productions
• Provide render time estimates to producers, directors and animators for dailies

Studio Support:

• Monitor studio infrastructure servers and escalate problems
• Answer and escalate Studio Help Desk calls after hours and on weekends

Shot Prep/Finaling Artists

Description:

The Shot Prep/Finaling Artist works on shots that have gone through Animation (and other departments as well), making them ready for Lighting.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The Shot Prep/Finaling Artist is responsible for executing the staging, blocking and camera work that makes up the foundation of a successful shot and/or sequence of shots during Pre-Visualisation, Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout as required. The Layout Artist is responsible for translating the storyboards and director’s launch of a sequence/shot into Maya while working as a team to ensure that the cinematography adheres to the filmic language established for the project as well as maintains a consistent style and coherent level of continuity – both visually and technically – throughout the duration of the production. He or she produces work (shots) in a fast paced, CG environment using Maya and a suite of proprietary software for THE NUT JOB feature film, amongst other productions/titles required by the studio. All Leads and Layouts Artists, pending skill set, may be required to assist other asset/shot departments such as modeling, character finaling, fur finaling, lighting/composite with hands-on shot work.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

To collaborate with the Director/Lead Layout Artist/Director of Photography to explore and develop the visual story of THE NUT JOB 3D feature film slated for theatrical release, amongst other titles.

To support colleagues; this may include troubleshooting and/or obtaining appropriate resolution to any technical issues as they arise to keep production moving forward.
To streamline or eliminate unnecessary scenes and filming requirements from the production as well as partner with the Stereoscopic Team.
To maintain awareness of the broader show needs as they relate to aspects of art and design (composition/spatial perception of objects in 3D space) and related revisions which include, but are not limited, to stereoscopy.
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, mood.
To assist in training and mentoring of Entry Level artists as required.
To familiarise, develop/script, and test production pipeline tools, work-flow and processes in support of studio projects and pipeline growth.
To ensure quality control via verifying that all shots follow studio policies and guidelines prior to moving into next stage of production.
To work and collaborate with Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, CG/VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.

Required Skills and Experience:

3 years of computer graphics production experience or combination of traditional layout and computer graphics production experience required
Strong understanding of cinematography a must
Bachelors degree in Animation, Film, Art, relevant field or equivalent experience desired;
A strong working knowledge of the principles of cinematic staging, blocking and camera work;
Expertise in Maya with good working knowledge of Unix/Linux;
Scripting and programming skills a plus
Excellent working knowledge of animation for both cameras and CG characters;
Basic CG modeling skills a must;
Good working knowledge of stereoscopic production methodologies;
Must be able to work in a collaborative environment and take direction easily and be willing to participate; as a member of a team as well as to work independently as required;
Proven experience within Layout Department on animated feature productions with a strong interest in Rough Layout, Layout, Final Layout, and Set Dressing and Stereoscopy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Interpret verbal direction and visual reference to understand the story context and aesthetic objectives for visual effects.
Collaborate with supervisors and peers in the design, execution, and delivery of effects elements
Troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
Support integration of effects into other departments’ workflows.
Assist in training and supporting other artists

REQUIREMENTS

Experience with effects simulations in features, television, or equivalent.
Understands procedural workflows.
Comfortable using Maya + Houdini. 3Delight (or Prman) and RealFlow are pluses.
Familiar with effects lighting, rendering, and compositing techniques.
A good eye for composition, motion, and other aesthetics.
Strong communication and collaboration skills. Able to understand and take direction and criticism.
Resourceful: able to troubleshoot, solve problems, and find workarounds as appropriate.
Modeling, surfacing, and lighting experience are pluses.
Programming and/or scripting skills are big pluses.

Senior Previs Artist

Position: Senior Previz Artist
Reports to: Previz Supervisor/Previz Lead/Assistant Production Manager
Department: Rough Layout

Position Description:

The Pre-viz Artist reports to the Pre-viz Supervisor, the Pre-viz Lead, and the Assistant Production Manager. His/her first priority is to create dynamic, creative and inspiring cinematic expressions for the film that support the narrative, adhere to the Director’s vision (as represented by the story reel) and works within Production assumptions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Work closely with the Director and Pre-vis Supervisor to create cinematic sequences in the 3-D environment that both interpret and enhance the their unique vision for the story.
Must be able to work from storyboards and/or create sequences from script treatments.
Able to analyze, trouble-shoot and creatively solve cinematic problems that inevitably arise in the course of production.
Able to pitch and effectively communicate these solutions and ideas to the Director, Pre-vis Supervisor and creative team.
Work with the Director, the Pre-vis/Shot Prep Supervisor and the CG Supervisor to refine sequence and shot iterations until approved.
Adhere to Pipeline protocols for the Pre-vis/Shot prep department, as established by Production Engineering.
Identify and flag any pipeline or department work-flow problems that may arise.
Adhere to the production schedule for the department.
Attend department meetings with to keep up to date on story reel changes and department requirements.
Communicate in a timely fashion with APM and Production for all inter-department issues.
Attend all sequence reviews, launches and approvals with the Director and Production. Maintain detailed and accurate notes.
Provide a clean, legible final file and appropriate notes to the next department (Shot-prep).

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer Science or computer animation or equivalent work experience.
10+ years of experience creating cinematic pre-visualizations or rough layout for CG animation, with multiple feature film experience.
A strong interest in Previs/Layout, story telling and Stereoscopy.
Strong knowledge of cinematic language and the fundamentals of image structure, staging, lensing and composition.
Strong knowledge of story structure.
Some exposure to modeling, lighting, texturing and animation is preferred.
Demonstrated experience working in the Maya environment and solid knowledge of the basic tools of the CG Pre-vis artist.
