    There is a very good alternative to that, which I use often. You can create curve from an edge and fill it in the curve panel with the thickness you need. That excludes the need of creating a curve for the profile and have many advantages such as easily changing the thickness and resolution of your cable, applying modifiers to it and editing it in a very fast and efficient manner.
