Pixar Stylizing Animation

At SIGGRAPH 2013 Pixar introduced the publication Stylizing Animation By Example.

Pierre Benard , Forrester Cole, Michael Kass, Igor Mordatch , James Hegarty , Martin Sebastian Senn, Kurt Fleischer, Davide Pesare and Katherine Breeden participated in this publication. Institutions involved in the project are Pixar Animation Studios, the University of Toronto , the University of Washington, Stanford University .

The objective of the research : to explore new avenues for non-photorealistic rendering in order to achieve an outcome that is expressive, but without the defects of conventional techniques.

Specifically, the approach adopted can draw 2D illustrations on a selection of frames from a 3D animation (a picture drawn every 10 or 20 frames). The algorithm is then responsible for producing the inbetweens while maintaining temporal coherence and style illustrations. In sum , the artist guides the animation and style .

It will be interesting to follow the work of Pixar in this area : we can think before considering a possible feature film non- photorealistic rendering , the studio will explore the method with a short film.

  • This is incredibly cool I wonder if they plan to fusion this with the Paperman style technology done by Disney
