German game developer presented Legend of Damocles – cinematic created by Platige Image for upcoming Xbox One game Ryse: Son of Rome.
Crytek’s new production transports player to the heart of the Roman Empire. The cinematic created by Platige tells the story of Damocles, a revengeful spirit of Roman officer. It’s the first production created by Platige for Crytek. The talented group of graphic designers and animators was involved in the project for 5 months.
We faced quite an unusual task this time. We had to create a cinematic in a form of a flashback to the game based on a highly advanced graphic engine. The movie had to stand in a contrast to extremely realistic graphic of the game. We decided to use painting-like stylization on 3D images. All the characters were literally moved from the concepts, along with paintbrush tracers, falling of pieces of paint and thick painterly. As this living animated pictures move they leave traces of ink behind and shower small pieces of paint. All the environments were moved into 3D in the same way. Painted, rich textural, flat images were smashed and very literally, with every imperfection, moved into the 3D. All these elements were actually covered with plastic smoke and sunk in levitating dust. We wanted to combine abstract, dream-like images with a suggestive and clear way of movie story. – says Jakub Jabłoński art director and animation director.
Our starting point for “Legend of Damocles” were concept paintings by Jakub Jabłoński. Those paintings were our guideline, reference, a benchmark… What we wanted to do was to create something visually very close to those paintings, but in motion. A 3d animation that does not look like 3d animation. This is not an easy task by any means. Finally we decided that if we want everything to look painterly, we’ll need to simply paint as much of it as possible. This meant hand-painting all the textures, backgrounds, lot of particle sprites, etc. But it’s not that simple – traditionally rendered 3d objects with painted textures still look like 3d objects. So in our quest to break away from the ’3d’ look we made some of the surfaces multi layered, to show some parallax in motion, and added lot of sprite-based particles to some surfaces. The blood simulations benefited from those sprites as well. Then we used simple, but rarely used hard shading – with very sharp boundaries between light and shade. To slightly soften the results, we often used area shadows. This all works in conjunction with our textures, containing baked in soft lighting. Usually, it’s a wrong thing to do – but not this time. Finally, in the compositing stage, for selected frames, we often used paintovers by Jakub, and tried to match them as closely as possible. In the end, the way it looks is a blend of many, usually very simple and often old school techniques.- add Selim i Andrzej Sykut CG supervisors.
